Title: James Pitt in Hereford same as James Pitt baptized in Canon Frome?
Post by: lmfamilyresearch on Thursday 17 May 18 00:28 BST (UK)
Has anyone made a connection between James Pitt, a shopkeeper in Hereford (Bye-town street and High-town) from 1830-1851 and James Pitt baptized on 23 Mar 1807 in Canon Frome.  James Pitt the shopkeeper is my ancestor but I don't know if he is the same James Pitt baptized in Canon Frome.  If yes, then I am able to trace this line further back.  If no, then I have a bit of a brick wall.

Is he on the 1851 census?  Where does he give as his birthplace?

Hi,

Unfortunately he is not on the 1851 census (at least that I can find).  I do know that he moved to Canada (Toronto) with his family in 1851 so I suspect he left Hereford before the 1851 census was taken and after the Canada 1851 census was taken (because I can't find him on that one either).  He does appear in the Canada 1861 census.

A very tenuous link:
As you know, from your postings on this forum,  James Pitt (c1806 to 1862) was draper at Scotland House, High Town, Hereford and married to Sophia, the daughter of substantial farmer Charles Rufford Bennett of Clehonger, Herefordshire.
In my, limited, experience the children of farmers often married children of other farmers – presumably because they socialised together – so I wonder if James Pitt was also from a farming family. He must have had some assets to open his business in 1830

In February 1833 a Mr Pitt of Ashperton (Herefordshire) advertised a reward for the return of a lost sheepdog if returned to him or Mr Pitt of Scotland House, Hereford.
It would be logical for the two Mr Pitts to be connected.

Census returns etc show a likely candidate as farmer Stephen Pitt (c1804 Canon Frome, Herefordshire) of Wassington Farm, Ashperton.
Stephen Pitt of Wassington, Ashperton married at Ashperton in 1830 Ann Bishop of Castle Frome.
So the Pitts seem to be farmers from Castle Frome.

Interesting that in 1841 at White House Farm, Canon Frome is farmer James Pitt (aged 62 who died 18th July 1841) and wife Elizabeth which would be right age to be the parents. Elizabeth died 25th March 1863 at the Stone House, Bosbury.
Her executors were sons John Pitt of Weston Beggard and Walter Pitt, ironmonger, of Ledbury.
The wills of either may give the link you are looking for.

Regarding the Clothing Trade in Provincial England 1800-1850: yes this is the same James Pitt.  I know this because I have found marriage and death notices in the Hereford papers that say he was from High-town/Bye-town.  Even though he moved with his wife and children to Canada, the family still put notices in the Hereford papers.

Regarding the tenuous link: my gut feeling is they are the same family.  I will request a copy of the will.  I will do the same thing for the Bennetts that are associated with this Pitt family.

We have 2 pictures which have been handed down from my mother which show White House Farm in March (year unknown).   It states on the write up to Country Life magazine the following:

The accompanying photographs were taken this year at the White House Farm on the Canon-ffrome estate, near Ledbury in Herefordshire.  Mr Walter Pitt, the present tenant, and his ancestors who have occupied the farm since the year 1804, have always taken great pride in their snowdrops, as well as in their hops for which the Canon-ffrome estate has for so long been celebrated.  The appearance of this farm garden during the month of March was a really beautiful one.

I guess you may well be interested in having these pictures as we have no idea why they are in our family.  We would gladly pass them on to you.  Regards, Rowland.

Hi Liisa

I think we may have the picture of White House Farm because there are Pitt's in our family although I don't think they are in any way connected to White House Farm. All my Pitt relations were born in Worcester, England.

Hi Rowland,

I have often wondered if my Pitt's had originated from Worcester since it seems to relatively close to Canon Frome.  I would be interested to hear more about your Pitt ancestors (we can do this via email).  I am under the impression that James Pitt of Canon Frome may not have been born at Canon Frome.
