I have just received a death certificate for my Dad's cousin who died in Hatfield in 1926 aged 3 years. It says there was an inquest and wondered how I can obtain a record of this.

Hi Alyson,
You could try searching the newspapers to see if there is an article on the inquest.

Thanks. Will try that.

Perhaps ask a moderator to move this thread to Hertfordshire rather than Herefordshire?

Individual Coroners decide what happens to the papers very many of them were destroyed by the coroner anyway, hence there are regional variations in survival. It is a simple enough matter to enquire at the appropriate county record office, which will almost certainly know what is available and where it is. While they are within the definition of public records and open to the public after 75 years many will not have survived those 75 years. Once 15 years old the records can be weeded,' that is destroyed or sampled by the individual coroner concerned. A newspaper report is the best bet.

Why? The OP may well have chosen the correct forum.
Just because the one in Hertfordshire is larger and more well known, and obviously the only one you know about, doesn't mean that there are not others.
In fact the village/parish of Hatfield in Herefordshire is between the villages/parishes of Puddlestone and Thornbury just North of the A44 between Leominster and Bromyard.

Thanks for all your replies.
I did slip up with my initial posting as it should have been Hertfordshire but the info is still useful.
I have tried searching the newspapers but still can't find any information.

Have you followed up Stan's suggestion (reply #4)?

Hi,
I have searched the newspaper archives online but found nothing for the surname. I even tried his middle name Stevenson (a family surname) with no luck.
My next step is to contact the records office.
Thanks.
