Title: Pauline Edythe Peppler
Post by: Jessies Mum on Tuesday 12 June 18 22:19 BST (UK)
Trying to work out records I am finding about this particular lady.  Born 7 April 1909 in Iowa (according to Iowa delayed birth records her parents were George H Peppler and Eva Cole Buchan).  In 1912 her mother marries Jesse Allgood.

At age 21 Pauline marries John Ralph Harris (1903-1985).  On the Iowa Marriage Records it states that her father is George Alexander Buchan and Mary Longnecker (her grandparents).

In 1997 Pauline passes away with her surname being McFarland.

It's all a little confusing and any assistance would be sincerely appreciated.  Thanks.

I'm still looking but, as a starter ....

There is a tree at FamilySearch.  It shows Eva Buchan marrying George Peppler in 1909, five days after the birth of Pauline, in Grundy County, Iowa.  A brother, Thurlow Virgil Peppler, was born in 1912 and then, less than two months later, Eva married Jesse Allgood.   [Apparently, Eva and George were divorced sometime around 1912.  George returned to NYC and seems to have remarried, according to WWI draft registration].  It looks like Thurlow stayed with his mother and used the surname Allgood but Pauline stayed with her grandparents and used the surname Buchan.

In 1920, Pauline was living with her grandparents and was listed as their daughter.  There was also a younger girl Alice, aged 9, who was also listed as a daughter.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GRND-KHD?i=34&cc=1488411

However the biographical information about George A. Buchan at Find-a-Grave says that George and his wife had 12 children [they are all listed] AND two "nieces," Pauline and Alice.  So it is pretty clear that George and Mary were not Pauline's true parents.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/5032714/george-alexander_(alex)-buchan

Who the heck was Alice?  No telling.  Like Pauline and Thurlow, Alice had a delayed birth registration BUT, although she was later referred to as a "niece," in 1959 when she got her belated birth certificate she swore that George and Mary Buchan were her parents.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS34-ZPXB?i=4353&cc=2527591

Was Alice also a Peppler?  The 1910 census would be helpful but so far, I have not found these people in 1910.

It appears to be an interesting family dynamic involving Pauline and other members of the family.

There are numerous articles and tidbits (local gossip...who's visiting who) in the the Grudy County papers.

When Pauline (Mrs Ralph Harris) is mentioned in articles/snippets involving any of the children of George A Buchan and Mary Elizabeth Longnecker she is often referred to as their sister.

1900 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9KL-V93

When Pauline (Mrs Ralph Harris) is mentioned in articles/snippets involving Eva (Mrs Jesse Allgood) she is referred to as her daughter.

When Pauline (Mrs Ralph Harris) is mentioned in articles/snippets involving George A or Mrs Alex Buchan she is referred to as granddaughter.

========

In Mrs. Alex Buchan (Mary Elizabeth Longnecker)'s obit in 1938 Pauline is referred to as her granddaughter who she reared.

"Two granddaughters, Mrs J. Ralph Harris of Waterloo and Mrs. Elvin Hansen of Waterloo were reared by Mrs Buchan."

Obit: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01m6u/

It appears the Alice listed below Pauline's name in the 1920 census is actually a granddaughter also.

1920 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8B5-CZW

Alice also appears to have a delayed birth record(changed), listing George A Buchan and Mary Elizabeth Longnecker as her parents.

"In 1997 Pauline passes away with her surname being McFarland."

Where does this information come from?  There is a record at Find-a-Grave for Pauline Algood McFarland [1930 - 2017], daughter of Albert and Bertha Algood.  She was born in Grundy Center.  She died and was buried in Waterloo, Iowa.  I haven't checked this out, but I'm guessing that Albert Algood was a brother of Jesse Algood.  So this Pauline would be a 'step cousin' of Pauline Edythe [Peppler] Buchan Harris

Pauline is transcribed as Pauline Pepples in the  1915 census.

1915: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QK4R-1GY7

Her card is (Image 1794) and her father Henry is listed on the preceding image (1793)

==================

Alice' s obit (Alice L. Hansen) in 1983 states she is the daughter of K. A. and Margaret E. Buchan Taylor.

Margaret/Maggie is Eva's older sister by 2 years.

Obit: https://waterloo.newspaperarchive.com/waterloo-courier/1983-06-01/page-6/

Alice also appears to be an out or wedlock birth as Pauline was.

Margaret/Maggie married George Halfwassen in 1913 and got remarried to Kinsey A. Taylor in 1919. The first marrige record list Maggie as "Miss", indicating she hasn't been previously married.

Oh my gosh Erato and RJ137 - the information that you are finding around Pauline and her family is just incredible.

I have the US Public Records Index, 1950-1993,Volume 1 that has Pauline E McFarland, born 7 April 1909 living in Seattle, Washington.

Then from the US Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014 I have:

Name:   Pauline E. McFarland
SSN:   484-07-3545
Last Residence:
98125 Seattle, King, Washington, USA
BORN:   7 Apr 1909
Died:   10 Sep 1997
State (Year) SSN issued:   Iowa (Before 1951)

I am in Australia so my resources for searching are a bit limited, but I am thinking this is still the woman we are searching for as her birth dates certainly match up.

Actually, I think that means that I was wrong and Pauline WAS living with her grandparents in 1915.  She had Card #50 which would put her in sequence with the members of the Buchan family whose cards are numbered from #41 [Alex] to #49 [Theodore].   I think that sequence of numbers indicates they are all in the same household.  On the other hand, Henry Peppler [her uncle, brother of George Peppler] had card #B408, indicating a totally different household.
