Hello
May I ask for a lookup of a Coroner's Inquest for William Barrett, who died on 20/1/1859 in Christchurch according to the Barbadoes St Cemetery records.
https://archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23586415
I am hopeful he is my William Barratt ,painter and glazier whose death certificate has eluded myself and others both in the BMD records and fiche for years, having tried all variations of the surname.Last found on a Wellington jury list for 1855.His widow Mary Ann re-married in 1861.
William Barrett, subject of the Inquest was also recorded as painter on a jury list in Christchurch prior to his death.
I haven't been able to find anything on paperspast regarding the inquest.
Thanks
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Yes, I can get this for you.
By the way, you accidentally posted in NZ Completed Requests so I've moved your topic to the main board.

Thanks Spades
Both for the look up and moving the post - I was about to apologize :)
No idea how that happened - must have been the excitement!

No need to apologise, it’s easy to end up on the wrong page, we’ve all done it. :D 8)

Thank you very much Spades,
Sorry for the delay,Yahoo has now let me into your emails and the information looks interesting and somewhat shocking.
If this is "our" William ,it paints a very different picture as to his character.
I think it must be because the cemetery record is correct in other respects.
Again,thankyou

Hi Barbara,
You're welcome! :)
Have you looked for any mention of him in the local Police Court reports on PapersPast for convictions of drunkenness?
And also look in the New Zealand Police Gazettes digitized on Archway.

No,I did search Papers Past for his name, but nothing specific.
Will try the Police Gazettes as well - they may have info on another habitual drunkard I seem to have inherited.
Thanks for that :)

Probably a stupid question ,but I can only find Police Gazettes from 1878.Are there some as early as 1859?
Thanks

No you are correct, with a few exceptions http://archives.govt.nz/sites/default/files/Police_Gazettes.pdf

Thankyou :)

Hi barbara,
Yes, sorry, I should have realized that suggestion wouldn't help you very much given the early date of the event.

He'll turn up one day if he's meant to ;)
