Title: GAUNT Sydney Percy
Post by: Wiggy on Monday 18 June 18 06:10 BST (UK)
We have people on our tree who say they are descended from Sydney GAUNT born in London 1826, Married 1851, Mary Teresa (or Teresa Mary) CURR, died Tasmania 1900.  He had a daughter 1853, who died aged 1 yr, and a son - see below.  We think there are only those two children.

The link would be Sydney Percy GAUNT born 1859 Tasmania, married 1904  Rosa May (Daisy) Turmine,  died 1939.   But we can't find anything else about him.

Father, Sydney,  died intestate so no help there.

Are there any clever researchers out there who can shed some light on this family please?
All help very gratefully received.

MR. SYDNEY GAUNT.
Mr. Sydney Gaunt, of Windermere, passed away at his residence yesterday, after a long and painful illness. Deceased, who was 74 years of age, was the eldest son of Mr. Matthias Gaunt, M.D., who came to the colony in its early days and took up a grant of 3000 acres at Windermere. Another son is Mr. Edward Gaunt, of this city. Mr. Sidney Gaunt followed agricultural pursuits for the greater part of his life, first at Windermere, later on at Carrick, and again at Windermere, where he spent the last 20 years. He also took an active part in public affairs, and leaves a widow and one son, Mr. Percy Gaunt, to mourn their loss. The funeral takes place at 3 p.m. to-day.

Thanks Cupoflife - that is the one in my first post!  Great!  Yes that is the father.

( It is the son and his 'progeny' we are looking for. )   The age at death for Sydney, confirms that the date in Tassie archives of 1836 is incorrect for his birth - he was in fact born in London in 1826 and registered in Tasmania 1836.

Wivenhoe - thanks for that - I Have just found the first son Sydney Charles born 1905 - haven't found the others yet - still looking.
Edit -
They have named them!!   ;) ;)   Wonderful!    Thanks so much - makes life easier!

Great help and I will keep searching.

Sorry Wivenhoe - no I don't think there is an earlier marriage.

You said three children   -  That is good -
Edit to remove names.
We are looking for rellies down the female line - so now we need Teresa  Gaunt marrying someone Dickson.

No she married Westlake - one of the son's daughters then.     I MUST learn to read more carefully.

Great help - thanks so much.

Is this of use to you Wiggy?  I think I may have found this a few years ago when you were looking for Gaunt - but the link is still on my screen.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained though!

You really are terrific folks - thanks very much!!

sorry JB - no go with that link.   Not ours.

Many Thanks for the link Wivenhoe - I will try it (- probably tomorrow - got things to do this evening.)

Sue - thanks for those extra names.  I saw than mistranscription  in Victoria  but only of one - not the other.

I am thinking it is getting harder as we are gitting into territory where some are living.  We are chasing a family where the mother must have died recently I think and she didn't leave much knowledge behind - Her daughter is trying to piece things together.

The church in Tasmania built by the 'partiarch' of this Gaunt family is listed for sale to pay redress to child abuse victims - the parish is trying to stop the sale and some of the family are trying too.
In November this year the church will celebrate 175 years.

A distant cousin is trying to round up as many family as she can.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Thanks  Gerry - Pretty sure that is the first Sydney who was born 1826 and died 1900.  He was the son of the patriarch, and definitely a farmer.
His father built the flour mill at Windermere.

When they keep calling their eldest son Sydney it does get confusing.

Wiggy.    :)
