Title: Where to start?
Post by: Towdlass on Monday 18 June 18 15:14 BST (UK)
I am trying to locate a family member who emigrated to Australia in the 1960s. Where do I start when trying to do this? I can't find him on passenger list on FindMyPast or Ancestry but I'm certain that he did go. It is possible that he married and emigrated with his new wife but I can't verify this. Any guidance  would be greatly appreciated.

I can't be 100% sure but I believe passenger lists only go up to 1960, someone else might now better than me

If you think he remarried is 1939 to early for you to double check then look for a death

Thank you Dundee I'll try that. Louisa maud but he married in 1962, as far as I know, and he was born in 1943. Thanks for your reply though.

The National Archives of Australia http://naa.gov.au name search might be a good chance the passenger arrival index goes up to 1966.
You could also try the Australian Electoral Roll records on ancestry as they go up to 1980, if they have an unusual name that may help otherwise you could be inundated with hundreds of John Smiths or similar. But I have used both to help track down an English migrant.

Hi mabeljessie,

Thank you so much for that. Actually I have been lucky enough to have another member of Rootschat, who lives in Australia, who has been kind enough to help me with my search. I think that we have gone as far as we can with the search and now I just have to sit down and write a letter which will have to go snail-mail. Then it will be just keeping my fingers crossed that we have found the right person. Rootschat and it's members are just brilliant. Thank you again.
