Title: George and Mary Butler
Post by: Jane190 on Tuesday 03 July 18 16:15 BST (UK)
Hey ,

I want to know if there is a connection between these two people below .

On the Romany & Traveller Family History Society  website i‘ve found a death for a George Butler died 29th February 1772 in Wroughton,Wiltshire and he’s a Traveller. My ancestor Mary Butler married in Wroughton on the 17th of may 1757 to George Picket(s/o William+Mary). I want to know if George Butler and Mary Butler are related maybe her father or brother or cousin , I don’t know her birth date and parents . Was Mary also a Traveller ?

Jane,

Have you been through the parish registers for Wroughton looking at all the Butler entries?

Do George and Mary appear out of the blue or are there other Butler events in the PRs over a period of time?

There's no Picket in the family tree of Joseph and Letitia Butler by Eric Trudgill.

@Darnity

No I didn’t look trough the parish registers for Wroughton ? How can I do this ? I’m not a member of Romany&Traveller Family history society.

@ciderdrinker

Thanks for the information  :) a familytree from geni.com shows that Judith Waldron was born in Chiseldon  and daughter of Robert Waldron and Charity Hall.

But I would like to know if my Butler’s were also Romany or Travellers .

It looks like the original parish registers for Wroughton are available on Ancestry.co.uk so you could check for the name Butler there to see if they are settled members of the community or just passing through.

To get an idea of the kind of 'markers' to look out for in an individual to help you decide if he/she has Gypsy blood, take a look at this page of the Romany and Traveller FHS website:

https://rtfhs.org.uk/gypsy_identity/

In summary what you're looking for are four essentials in the same person: typical Romany surname; unusual first name/s; typical Romany occupation; and signs of mobility - being described in a record as a Traveller, vagrant, stranger, itinerant, Gypsy, passing through and so on. Butler is a known Romany surname but it's also carried by many non-Romanies too.
