Hi Heather,

SCOTLANDS PEOPLE
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Baptisms
Hector STEWART 12 Jan 1839
Donald STEWART, 18 Feb 1840
Catherine STEWART 18 May 1841
Donald STEWART 13 Dec 1842
Lilias STEWART 25 Jun 1844

All Baptised Urquhart and Logie Wester, Ross & Cromarty
John STEWART & Margaret GORDON
Son Donald born 1840 died before 13 Dec 1842.

1841 Census:
Brea Findon, Urquhart, Ross-shire
https://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Parish 84, ED 3, Folio 0, Page 4
John STEWART 28, Joiner
Margrat STEWART 30
Hector STEWART 2
Cathrein STEWART 2 months,
Janet PATERSON 20, Female Servant
All born Ross & Cromarty

Looking at the family in Ontario 1871 - and I can see them in Scotland in 1861 too,  I'd suggest Catherine is 'Metta'.  I'd doubt very very much they would have actually baptised a daughter born in Scotland at that time as 'Metta', it must surely be a pet name.

I'll post the other Scottish Census is a mo.

Cheers

Maybe you already have all this - but think 'Metta' is missing?
I'm sure she is Catherine.

1851 Census: at Brae Findon, Urquhart and Logie Wester
Head: Margret STEWART  40?, Carpenters Wife, b Urquhart, Ross
Son: Hector STEWART 12, b Urquhart, Ross
Dau: Ketty? STEWART 10, Scholar, Urquhart, Ross
Son: Donald STEWART 9,Scholar, b Urquhart, Ross
Dau: Lilly STEWART 7, b Urquhart, Ross
Son: John STEWART 5, b Urquhart, Ross
Dau: Margaret STEWART 4, b Urquhart, Ross

Note: A'y have transcribed Head/wife/mother Margaret as age 60. Unlikely! She is probably listed as 40. Husband/father John not at home.
Dau: Ketty - as transcribed by A*y. The original Census sheet should be viewed - maybe it's written as Metty or Katy?

1861 Census:
Village of Alnesss, Ross
Head: John STEWART 47, Grocer, b Finntort, Ross
Wife: Margaret STEWART 51, Grocer Wife, b Finntort, Ross.
Son: Hector STEWART 21, b Finntort, Ross.
Dau: Catherine STEWART 19, b Finntort, Ross.
Son: Donald STEWART 17, Scholar of……. b Finntort, Ross.
Dau: Lilias STEWART 16, Scholar to…..b  Townloch, Ross
Dau: Margaret STEWART 14, Scholar Luo (per Stewart Sched), b  Townloch, Ross
Son: William STEWART 9, Scholar Luo (per Stewart Sched), b  Townloch, Ross

Note: Not sure what Finntort is meant to be….

But this is information on Alness
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ROC/Alness

MARRIAGE in York County, Toronto
On 12 Nov 1878, at 217 Center Street,
Presbyterian, married by License
GROOM: James HENDERSON age 42, Widower
Resident of Toronto
Born Thurso, Scotland
Parents: John & Annie HENDERSON
BRIDE: Catherine STEWART age 33, Spinster
Resident of Toronto
Born Alness, Ross-Shire, Scotland
Parents: John & Margaret STEWART
WITNESS:
Lilias STEWART, Donald HENDERSON, of Toronto

I'd say Catherine has lopped a couple of years off her age at marriage and would be nearer 37? And she continued on....In 1881, she's showing as age 35, in 1891 as age 46, in 1901 as age 52.

She died 1 Dec 1914, age 72 with birth recorded on her headstone as "May 1842 Alness, Rosshire, Scotland " (a year out,  she was baptised May 1841)

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/102230147

It seems Catherine and James had 2 sons, Gordon Stewart HENDERSON b 1879 and George Edward HENDERSON b 1881 (died same year).

I'm just summarising from the 1878 marriage onward, as you may have all on Catherine not realising she must be, imho,  'Metta'?

Cheers
