Title: McGuffie
Post by: mccubbin on Monday 23 July 18 18:44 BST (UK)
Hello I am looking for anything on Margaret McGuffie, she was born 1835,Glasserton to Jane McCubbin, I have Margaret on the 1841 Census still at Glasserton, also 1851 and 1861 all at Glasserton, I have looked for a death or marriage no luck with that, I even dropped the Mc in her surname, I think she has disappeared.
so any help would be great.
thank you
karen

Have you only looked in Scotland?  She may have moved to England and freebmd has several marriages for that name

Have you already ruled out the 1863 marriage on SP to Joseph Thompson?

Age out on this  :-\

MCGUFFOG MARGARET 20
MCCUBBING (mmn)
1861
885/ 14 Glasserton

If, the '0' has been mistranscribed & should be a '6' this would make the birth year c1835 i.e. a better fit?

You could compare the occupation from the 1861 census to that given on the death & hopefully it matches?

Was Margaret's mother alive/deceased in 1861?

This should be confirmed either way on the death?

Thanks Carole!

I possibly didn't make it clear on being her possible death but if it isn't, it would seem a coincidence although the age is out the mmn would certainly entice me to check it out?

I'm so glad for you Karen  ;D

I know SP can be very tricky to use especially with name variants & if you don't know the short-cuts it can make it very time consuming  ::)

Out of curiosity, what was her cause of death & who was the informant?

Hello,

A Margaret McGuffie was my maternal great-great grandmother, provided we are speaking of the same person.

The information at my disposal is that she was born in 1835 in Kirkinner, which is just to the east of "The Whaup", (or Whauphill), whereas Glasserton is down on the coast road from the Port to Whithorn. However, I have no attestation for my info, and my family has agricultural links to the area going back generations, so I'd be intersted to know where your link to "Glasserton" comes from. The family farm was at Barrachan (Shed Park or "Shedlach of Barrachan"). In the 1851 census, she is stated as age 18, which may make her birth date 1833. Parents John and Marion McGuffie. Married Henry Dixon (b. NI 1829, died 1879).

Same person?
