Could these children been adopted?
Researching the Cresswell family
Francis Joseph Cresswell born 1822 Norfolk, married to Charlotte Frances Georgina Gough-Calthorpe, born 1824 in 1850
They seem to have 4 children
Charlotte Rachel Frederica Cresswell b 1851 Norfolk
George Francis Addison Cresswell b 1852 ditto
Edith Frances Louisa Cresswell b 1854 ditto
Cresswell Augustus Cresswell b 1856
Now the problems
According to the Gro Records
Charlotte's father was called Pitcher, mother Pye
George's father was Gunton, mother's surname was Hawkes
The 2 other children parents were Francis and Charlottes
Any help would be appreciated

Charlotte Rachel Pitcher’s birth was registered Mar qtr 1851 - have you found her as an infant in that census?
-
Charlotte Pitcher seems to have remained with her mother Charlotte (who was remarried by 1861 to a John Wm Lane). Henry Pye in the household too (as father in law to Mr Lane) seems to confirm this family corresponds to the Mar qtr 1851 birth registration.
1861: RG9/1218/77/18.

It is worth looking for birth announcements in newspaper archives, Mrs f j cresswell and the Hon Mrs cresswell birth notices in Norfolk for several children, maybe they did not register the first two

Maybe they were actually born in a smart London maternity hospital.

These are likely to be Francis Joseph’s parents I think.
Added: yes this is confirmed by FJ and his brother Addison John Cresswell being executors of their father’s estate upon his death in 1861.
