Post by: Dannemois on Tuesday 14 August 18 14:37 BST (UK)
Hi
Seeking the location of 8 Sydenham Pl, Newton Road, Great Malvern in 1908; can someone please tell me if this address is still there?

That would be Newtown Road? Newtown was/is a suburb of Malvern.

But it's a long road, and I can't see Sydenham Place?

I can find several references to Sydenham Place, Newtown Road, including 4 entries in the 1911 census, but can't as yet place it on a map.

The 1911 summary book aspears to place it at the southern end of Newtown Road between the junctions with Hospital Bank and Link Top.

The houses on that part of the road seem to be named in blocks, i.e. Oakside, Albert Terrace, Albert Villas, Sydenham Place. presumably these names all now superseded by numbers.

There is an advertorial in an edition of the Abergavenny Mail, dated 21st February 1914.
Page 3, Column 2, towards the bottom headed "Malvern's Opportunity".

"On 24th January 1906 Mr T. Bullock of 4 Sydenham Place, Newtown Road, near The Institution, Great Malvern . . . . ."

Maybe a clue there?

I found Sydenham Villa on an old map, so I suspect Sydenham Place may have been located close by.

As I suggested earlier it's just south of the junction with Hospital Bank, and on the east side of Newtown Road.

There is a website www.malvernremembers.org.uk which has a few pre WW1 photos of Link Top and Newtown Road. Sydenham Place is not identified, but it gives you an idea of the area.

There was a Working Man's Club close by (I have often seen these called Working Men's Club and Institute) so perhaps this is what was being referred to?

Just seen in the summary book: 7 & 8 Sydenham Place, followed by Sydenham House, followed by Sydenham Villa, described as a working (something) club).

Sydenham Villa is still there http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mie/ on the most recent map I can find it's called the Newtown Club, 60 Newtown Road.

I feel that Sydenham Place was most likely simply the name of a group/terrace of houses on Newtown Road. I'm pretty sure it must have been close to Sydenham Villa (reply #6)
