Title: Clan Mow?
Post by: DeafDoggy488 on Wednesday 15 August 18 22:01 BST (UK)
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has heard of a clan called Mow which is supposedly to have originated in Roxburghshire?

I've not heard of that name before so hoping someone could shed some light on it for me.

Thanks.

The surname Mow comes from a place in Roxburghshire. It used to be "Molle", "oll" often becomes "ow"  in Scots words. Clans are from the highland areas of Scotland and you would not really use that word for a Borders family.

Clans are Clans like Campbell and McDonald. I am affiliated (a Sept) to the McDonald Clan but being a Sept could not become head of the Clan. At best Mow would be s Sept but as GR2 has stated it is not in the Clan or Sept system.

GR2? I get that, I remember reading somewhere that the Stewart Clan has different branches and I'm assuming that it'll be similar? Or not?

Black's Surnames has this as Molle. It first appears in the 12th cent', from the lands of Molle, now Mow in Morebattle, there's a long screed about the family giving land to the monks of Kelso etc'. In 1576 the laird of Mow was slain at the Raid of the Redeswire,  when the Scots beat the English!  ;D

In 1789 Mr William Mow WS & his brother John Mow of Mains applied to the Court of Session to have the name changed to Molle, the original spelling of the name. Possibly because mow has a sexual connotation in Scots!  ;D

Clan Mow is still thriving, and living in England!!! I am the authenticated and acknowledged 'Clan Chief', with proven descent from Lord John Mow of Mow in 1636. As family historian and keeper of the family archive, I may be able to help you with information you require.

OK, right. I think a Nance Mow is my 11x Great Grandmother. I traced my family tree from my maternal grandmother's line all the way back to Nance who married Andrew Young and had William Young (10x GGrandfather). I'm not sure if you have any information about her?

Thanks.

Sorry to say I have not found a Nance Mow. However, there are various male 'Mows' on the family tree who were younger brothers. We have no more data about them, but if you could give me a rough date for Nance I might be able to suggest where she could have fitted in. Also any idea of location would be a great help, too. Maybe we are (very) distantly related??!!

As far as I know Nance Mow was supposedly to have lived in the Roxburghshire during 1590s and onwards. William Young- her child was born in 1616.

Good morning, and thanks for your reply. It seems most likely that Nance was the granddaughter of Robert Mow, who is recorded as being a tenant in Mow of the Abbey of Kelso in 1567. This possibility is supported by Nance Mow and Andro Young's marriage taking place at Kelso, and their third child, also named Robert, being born at Kelso in 1619. As for her father's name I cannot help, except to say that the family at that time repeatedly named boys Alexander, James, John or Robert. So much so, indeed, that I was able to find later males on the family tree by searching for any of those names. Hope all this helps!!!
