Title: GEDCOM from FTM V11
Post by: nanny jan on Thursday 04 October 18 13:08 BST (UK)
Help!  My mind has gone blank and it is a very long time since I have needed to do this...…...how to I make a GEDCOM from my FamilyTreeMaker?

I'll write down the instructions and keep them safe.

Hi NJ.....strange how we lose our way when we haven't done something for a while...rather than explain...I think this will help as it has visual instructions:

https://www.familytreeforum.com/content.php/863-How-to-Create-a-GEDCOM

This is how I do it.

Go to your family tree.
Under the menu bar, next to your tree's name, there is a drop-down link labelled Tree pages with a down arrow. ...
Select Tree Settings from the drop-down menu.
On the right side of the page you will see a green button labelled Export tree, click it.

Good Luck!

It really frustrates me, the internet has been widely available for over 20 years and there is so little standardization. If you pick up a book, you have the title on the spine and the front cover usually above the author's name. You then open it and if it's got a loose jacket it has a brief synopsis. Opening the stiff cover you then come to the title page. You then have some publication and printing information and on the next page the title. You then have a forward introduction and a contents page. You then have the book, and at the end you have the glossary index and endpapers. It is so frustrating when you think of the amount of time that we always spend looking for something on a cluttered website.

And icons are so unclear. Different applications make different uses of even the common ones. Imagine the magnifying glass. Is it to make things bigger, or to help you find things or to go into things in greater depth, or to zoom in?

Having to post a reply to a PM here because the sender has blocked a reply from me. :-\

I've not resolved the issue,  a couple of attempts resulted in " not a valid GEDCOM file" message from my basic (free) Heredis program on my iPad. Busy few days but might be able to get advice from a son who is due to call in over the weekend.

In case you are using FTM 2017, all you have to do is click on File/Export and in the export window change the format from Family Tree Maker 2017 to GEDCOM.  Click OK and complete the download.
