Title: Oakman, Okeman, Oakeman
Post by: JanetteO on Tuesday 11 October 05 22:44 BST (UK)
Hi I'm interested in hearing from anyone that is researching the Oakmans.

Our tree starts of with Alfred Okeman b 1525 Albury, Herts and over the generations the spelling changes to Oakeman and then Oakman.

Most members of the tree so far have been born Albury, Little Munden, Furneux Pelham and Standon all found in herts. later generations many were born in Enfield and Ponders End in my particular branch of the tree.

Very common names in the tree are Henry, William, Joseph, Edward, Thomas, Alfred, John, James, David, Mary, Ann, Eliza and Elizabeth and quite a few Sarah's both through birth and through marriage.

Just confirming that like you I am still collecting notes on the Oakman family, especially with the help of Doreen in Meldreth.  I too am linked with the Albury family with mine ending up in Barnet in the late 1800s and Edmonton 1900.    My family stems from William Oakman whose mother Mary Ann Oakman married Sam Wood(s) in the year of his birth in 1835.  I have William's apprentice deed dated 1861 as bricklayer, his photograph and a silver spoon.   There is no record  of Williams father but he might have been a travelling musician from Italy staying at a local inn.    Any further information on this and on the Wood family would be appreciated.

I've just joined, and found this old message.

If anyone is out there - my branch of the Oakman family came from Albury (earliest I have is Raphe Oakman b 1577 in Albury), the family then moved via Furneaux Pelham to Foxton, and into Cambridge.

Any information very gratefully received (stories, photographs, documents etc etc!)

Hi! I'm new to this too! I have recently started looking into my family tree and appear to also be a decendant of Raphe Okeman! Our, more recent history branches out at the marriage of Albert Oakman born 1906 to Mary Cornwall born 1909 ( Albert parent being William Oakman and Sarah Daniels married 1898 in the parish church of west ham) All information would be gratefully recieved!!!!!!!!

Hi everybody - Even newer still (Joined about 3 minutes ago)
My connection with the Oakman family also starts with Raphe Oakman (Albury) then moves up to Furneux Pelham - Foxton - Ely
I follow the Henry (1731)  /  William (1756)  /  Thomas (1790)
Nathan (1825)  /  Henry James (1856)  /  Martha (1890) line into Ely
I have a small collection of photographs of the Ely Oakman's if anyone is interested and would love help if anyone can take me back past Raphe Oakman 1577 please?
Best regards to all

Alan

Hi Alan
I saw your post that you have some photos of the Ely \Oakmans, I am the Grandaughter of Elizabeth Oakman born Ely 1879 daughter of Benjimine and Margaret Oakman.
I would really love some piccys of the Ely Oakmans, I have only a few photocopies of some from eons ago that someone sent me, they are now a bit dogeared. I would love to swap info with you, i have a bit of info from years gone by, i am in contact with various people doing the Oakman trees.

I have just discovered the wife of my John Joseph Eales was Elizabeth Ann Skeggs, daughter of William Skeggs, son of John Skeggs and Sarah Oakman, daughter of Jerimiah Oakman, son of Henry.....etc right back.
Came from Brent Pelham back to Albury, Herts. Skeggs (Skiggs) came from Anstey.
Ended up in Middlesex, Bow and St George in the East.
Elizabeths daughter, also Elizabeth married Ralph Frederick Seymour (G Grandfather).
Raphe Oakman (1577) is my 11 times Great Grandfather, if I have done the maths right.

Hi! I've just joined and found this thread. I too have come down from Raphe Oakman via the Pelhams and Albury. My 2 x great grandfather James Oakman, moved to Theydon Bois in Essex and married Emma Maynard. They had several children including my great grandmother Elizabeth Oakman, who taught in the school at Theydon Bois in the second half of the 1880s before marrying Albert Payne of Navestock in 1890. Anyone else following that line?
