Hi, I have a copy of the marr. cert. Place of birth Poole, Dorset. Father George Alexander Wayne, mother Stella Marjorie Broughton . When you go through all the mentions of him on ship passages over the years from 1884 until close to his death, his age varies quite considerably.
The first time he appears is when he marries Florence on Thursday Island.

H gained his master'scert. in 1893 in Sydney, but I have no further info. Surely he would have had to provide a history of his seamanship for the certificate.?

He is my brick wall.

Cheers, June

thank you for your reply.  Herbert was my grandfather, and history on George Charles was always sketchy and quite fanciful.  I have been to his grave in Melbourne, but only recently found that obit. On his death cert. there is little info., so the person giving the info. knew only a ;little about him. Supposedly he was killed in a bar room brawl in Asia, but I now think he may just have left Florence for someone else.  He is a mystery right from his beginning, as all his story is incorrect. Birth date, parents names etc.  I knew about the Thursday Island connection, but thanks anyway.  I wonder who M.S. was?  Will keep on looking.  Thanks again
Cheers, June

I am still trying to track down my great-grandfather, George Charles Wayne. He died in Melbourne in Dec. 1917, an obituary gave him as a master mariner, which I know is correct, but it says RNR., would that be Royal Naval Reserve?  If so, how do I go about finding any info. they may have on him?

Hi Jane, Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to your post.  I haven't been able to find out much about this place.  My g.grandmother apparently was suffering from pernicious anaemia, and was treated with morphine, and became addicted. So whether she was in there for the anaemia or the drug addiction, I don't know.  Three years after that census , she came to Aust. While she was in the Met.Con.Ins. she was baptised (age 18) and I thought that was a bit strange.

From what I can gather from older fam. members she never spoke of her time in England, so it leaves us with a lot of questions.  Her mother was in Leavesden Asylum from 1869 until she died in 1907-so sad.

Sorry, I've not been much help.
Cheers, June

Hi, Yes, we are related.  I am in touch with (*), and we are waiting for her DNA results to maybe tell us some more.  I was in touch with Claude for quite a while before he died, and I am still in touch with your cousin, (*) (daughter of Ernest and Nell).  I am trying to get to see the application which would have been lodged with NSW govt. in 1893 for George to obtain his 'masters certificate'.
This man is a mystery - the names, Geo. Alexander and Stell M. Broughton appear to be fictitious, as I have not been able to find any record of either, or of Geo. C. 's birth.  When you look at his maritime records on ancestry his ages varies by about 10 years,so,  who is he??

If you want to be in touch privately, please get my email address from  (*).

Cheers, June

Thanks Jennifer, I have done heaps  of work on the Sinclair family, from their origins in Scotland, through their time in Knaresborough, down to Pulborough In Sussex, even visited both churches where the father, William was rector.  Another brother, William was Dean of London.  I have never been able to tie up Florence with the family, my grandfather even has Sinclair as his 2nd name.

Is there any way of finding out if the Sinclairs were sponsors at Florence's baptism in 1881?

Cheers, June

Hi Rosie, Thank you for your help.Henry James moved to Lincolnshire, where he settled in Cleethorpes/
grimsby area.  I am in c ontact with some of his descendants. Just as Florence never spoke of having a brother, Henry J. never spoke about a sister. It has always seemed strange to me, that H.J. was with the Pilkintons, but no sign of Sarah or Florence.  As far as I can ascertain, Sarah appears to have been committed to Leavesden Asylum in Watford, as a Sarah Blandford is there from '81 until her death in early 1900's.

At some time before her departure to Aust. Florence became involved with a .C.of E. family called Sinclair, as 2 of that family, Janet Mary and John Stuart are god parents of my grandfather and his brother, and I have a family bible which came from the Sinclair family.

Florence was very close mouthed about her past, and was very much about 'saving face' or doing the right thing

Realise this is a bit of a 'story', but there it is.

Cheers, June

Her parents were James Blandford died 1863 and Sarah Pilkinton . Florence gave the incorrect fathers name both at her baptism, and at her marriage in Oz. Henry James was her older brother.

Thanks.

my g.grandmother, florence ethel blandford was listed on 1881 census as a patient at this facility.
Does anyone know whether there is a record of patients.?  She was on the way to Aust. by 1884.
I found her baptism (age 18) while she was a patient, and wondered about this.

She doesn't appear on 1871 census, anywhere, so is a bit of a mystery.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers, June
