World War Two / 9 British Soldiers killed in accident in Hamburg area on 14 January 1946
« on: Wednesday 28 February 24 17:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to help an old chap find out more about the death of his Uncle.

These nine British soldiers were killed in an accident in/near Hamburg on 14 January, 1946. Family history (I know) has it that the men were sleeping on a barge/boat and the next morning they were found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning.

CWGC have no details and I have not been able to find anything online.

Just wondered if anyone else could find anything.

Thanks for reading this.

Regards

Hi All

Thanks for your replies and help.

I am the the Chairman of the Dublin WFA and our monthly lecture tomorrow is about the Killester Garden Village that was built just after WW1 for veterans. The speaker is researching the village and its occupants of which Christopher was one, the only document he and I have been able to find is his RN Service record mentioned by Queenie.

However, the info supplied by athacliath62 looks really promising and I will pas this onto the speaker.

Once again, thanks for your help and replies.

Hi

James Doyle was KIA on 27 May 1918 and has no known grave. A colleague of mine believes he may have traced his resting place to a grave on the Aisne marked simply as an 'Unknown Artillery Officer'. He is trying to gather as much information as possible and is looking specifically for  an obituary or photo, or indeed anything else!! We know from his entry on the CWGC website that the address given to them was 6 New Cottages, Dalick Street, Drogheda, further research shows that his wife was Margaret Anne (Possible maiden name Rourke and possible marriage in Woolwich in last quarter of 1897) and that they were both born in India.

Would be grateful for any help.

Hi Crumblie

I am involved with the Dublin WFA, one of our recent Zoom meetings was a lecture entitled "Uncovering the Dead 1918-1939". This was about the clearance of the bodies from the battlefields of the Western Front after the end of the Great War, the lecture was recorded and if you would like a link to it, send me a PM with you email address.
