Midlothian / Re: Robert Smith born 1853 Edinburgh
« on: Monday 28 August 23 08:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi Wie, I have only just noticed your post today after having a long break from ancestry hunting, and I was most interested to see it. Thank you for the message.
Like yourself I am the great granddaughter of Robert Swan Smith and Mary Ann Byron. I am descended from their first born child, Edward. I will leave it at that for now in case you too, are having a break from family tree business and don't see this reply, but if you do, it would be wonderful to make contact and exchange more news. Hope you see this soon and respond as I am quite excited! Best wishes, Carolyn.

Wie,
I am so very sorry not to have replied sooner to your post, but I only noticed it this morning after a long break from ancestry hunting! How amazing that we may be related, and I had no idea that Robert Swan Smith had been in the Merchant Navy, although we were up in Greenock last summer, and will be again next year, and I did know about Mary Jane and him living there. Also I had no idea he made ships in bottles!
I am the granddaughter of Robert's first son, Edward. I hope you find this message so that we can exchange news further. Very best wishes to you, Islay.

Ayrshire / Re: Puzzling wedding certificate
« on: Friday 27 August 21 08:40 BST (UK)  »
Thank you all so much for the time and effort you have put into helping me. The family were all strong Church of Scotland people, so Mary Ann marrying again, only 5 years after her marriage with John Duan in a Scottish church, to someone in a Catholic church in England, is surprising, especially as this man is a John too and with a surname starting and ending with identical letters D and N, but there are too many coincidences with names, dates etc there to discount the idea.
I will reread all your replies and look up the suggestions you have made for further research. Thank you again, very much. Best wishes, Islay

Ayrshire / Puzzling wedding certificate
« on: Thursday 26 August 21 17:26 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for reading this. I am most confused about a marriage certificate for my grandfather's sister, and wonder if anyone can help me.
She was Mary Anne Hervey, born 1869 Kirkmichael, although the family lived in Crosshill. Her father was Frederick Hervey and mother Mary Jane Caldwell. The family can easily be found on census returns for 1870 and 1880, and in 1891 Mary is in Ayr as a domestic servant. She marries in 1894, again in Ayr. Here is my puzzle.
She weds a John Duan, pit sinker, his parents given as James Duan and Ellen Mcglinn. This is undoubtedly the correct Mary Hervey's marriage, as both her sister and future brother in law are correctly named as witnesses, and her parents are correctly documented, including her father's job and mother's maiden name.
However, she is named as Mary Duan - if I correctly read the writing which is a little unclear - spinster. Surely she would have been Mary Anne Hervey if she was a spinster? Could it be a mistake and her new married name was put on the certificate instead of her maiden name?
I cannot see where Mary Anne and John Duan lived thereafter. His brother James was also a pit sinker and married in 1896 giving Benquatt, Dalmellington as his home, but I find no sign of his brother or their parents anywhere.
Ancestry further muddy the waters by suggesting that Mary Anne married a John Dalton in 1899 in Liverpool, her place of birth given as Crosshill in 1870, but even if she had been widowed shortly after her marriage to John Duan she would not have been recorded as Mary Anne Hervey, which was her maiden name. I think this must be another Mary Anne, but can easily stand corrected!
I would love to know what happened to Mary Anne Hervey and the rest of her story, but am struggling through a lack of information about her next years, or even anything about John Duan himself( in case another family member should know more about where they lived.) My grandfather died before I was born or he could have been a great help here!
Thank you for reading this. Any help would be much appreciated. Islay.

Sorry, my mistake, I see exactly where you got the information from about George being a labourer. It was exciting to see the marriage certificate. Thank you for the links too, very helpful. I am most grateful. Islay

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. Lots of leads for me to follow.
Just a quick question, where do you see the information that George was a labourer from? And also Frederick Harvey - which he was, all his life. Thank you very much, Islay

I thought it said farmer on the marriage certificate, but I may be mistaken. Just can't seem to find a birth for Mary Jane Caldwell anywhere! Guessing she married about the age of 20 she would have been born around 1836, or just earlier. Father George Caldwell, and mother possibly Sarah Jane. Place of birth unknown but again guessing near keady Armagh because of limited travel distance in those days. Really struggling here, Mary Jane cannot just have appeared from nowhere to marry in 1856 in keady! I'd love to know where she came from and who her parents were.
Maybe she is destined to be a mystery lady on my tree!
Thank you for your time and interest. Best wishes, Islay

Armagh / Colwell family in Dunlarg
« on: Sunday 21 June 20 12:21 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for a gentleman whose daughter, Mary Jane Caldwell, married my g. grandfather Frederick Hervey or Harvey in 1856 in Keady Armagh. He is named as George Caldwell, farmer, on their marriage certificate.
Other records show a farmer called George Colwell living in Dunlarg, 1795-1870. I wonder if this could be the gentleman whose daughter was Mary Jane Caldwell. Is Dunlarg very near to Keady so that the couple could have met?
Is there any way of finding out if his wife was called Sarah, as that name is mentioned on Mary Jane's death certificate, but with no surname.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you, Islay
