Hi Derek,

I've accessed the Quarter Sessions but couldn't find any reference to a conviction regarding my ancestor, unfortunately. But I've found the Shropshire Archives people very helpful (I've just ordered some digital copies of other records from them) so I think they will be my next port of call :-)

Hi Rachel,

I'm a bit stumped, to be honest. I've had a look through the quarter sessions, but that was of only limited help - I found a reference to a person with my ancestor's name, but it related to a post-mortem rather than a conviction. Not really sure where I go from here - I'm dying to find out what she did, but I just can't seem to find a source of records.

Shropshire / Hannah PAYNE/Robert WRIGHT - Oswestry/Ellesmere
« on: Tuesday 17 May 05 09:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm tearing my hair out here!! I know that Robert WRIGHT (born about 1830 in Ellesmere, Shropshire) married Hannah PAYNE (born about 1835 in Oswestry, Shropshire), and have records of them on all censuses from 1861 to 1901. However, it's as if they don't exist prior to 1861 (when they were living in Hordley, Shropshire) - I can't track down a reference to their marriage (and being able to order a copy of their marriage certificate would be really, really helpful!) and I've yet to find them on the 1851 census. Obviously they were born pre-registration, but I can't find any reference to their births on the LDS site, either. I think they must have married sometime prior to 1859, when their first (I assume) child was born, and if anyone could find a reference to their marriage, or any other information, I would be extremely grateful! (I think Hannah Payne had a brother, Thomas Payne, born 1839 in West Felton, Shropshire - he was living with Hannah and Robert in 1881).

Hi John,

Isn't it bizarre?! They must be *somewhere* - if it's the case that the records have been lost, it would be nice to be told. But odd that they've disappeared for both 1851 *and* 1861!

Shropshire / Worthen - where the heck is it?!
« on: Saturday 07 May 05 10:53 BST (UK)  »
Many of my ancestors came from Worthen, which for many years was officially in Montgomeryshire though recognised by most people as being actually in Shropshire.

I have copies of the 1851 Shropshire census and also the 1851 Montgomeryshire census, but my ancestors simply aren't there. Similarly with the 1861 census, which I've accessed via Ancestry - no ancestors, no Worthen. So where on earth can I find them?!

Hi Jan,

I'm basically interested in the Worthen area, piece nos 4255, 4256 and 4257. According to the manufacturer from whom I've ordered my CD, at that time Worthen was officially in Montgomeryshire (Chirbury) even though it was generally recognised by most people as being in Shropshire.

Glad this was of some help to you too, Allie! I know what you mean, though - they do seem to have gone out of their way not to be found, some of them ;-) - when they weren't giving false ages, they were giving different names or pretending to live in different counties, lol.

Just a note in case anyone reads this: according to the census CD publisher I contacted, Worthen parish (piece numbers quoted) is contained on their Montgomeryshire 1861 CD - which is fab news (well, not so fab in that I'll have to buy two CDs, but what the hey ;)) and nice to have that confirmed.
