Nottinghamshire / WW1 Memorial
« on: Friday 29 June 12 09:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi there!

I have 2 great uncles (brothers) who died in France in WW1, I have been trying to find a war memorial with possibly their names on but not been successful!

Do war memorials have the names of where the soldier was born or where he came from at the time of enlisting? And do all memorials have individual names on them?

Many thanks! :)

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: Cannot locate marriage evidence...

Thanks for your help guys! I came aross the Sarah Taylor & Varney marriage as well  ;D...No I know her name was Patricia...

Another thing, on my Grandmother and Grandfathers wedding cert (1949) where it mentions Name of father & Occupation it states it as Alfred Varney but if he had died then would it say 'deceased' in brackets? As just noticed one of the witnesses signatures is Harold Fox - Patricias future husband who she didn't marry untill the year after! Very confusing!  ???

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Cannot locate marriage evidence...
« on: Tuesday 29 March 11 21:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, just after a bit of advice really! I have been stuck on a certain line of my tree for a while now. I have been trying to look for a marriage of my grandmothers mother and father but cannot seem to find any record of one! My grandmother and her siblings were born with the surname VARNEY in Nottingham - which is the fathers name (Alfred). Mothers is Patricia TAYLOR born 1908 died 1990.
Another thing is I know she (re?)married after having all her children to Harold FOX in 1950, I found the index for that marriage no problem. It says for her surname TAYLOR OR VARNEY. Is this normal to have 2 surnames on a marriage certificate? Or was Patricia and Alfred not actually married when they had children or they was an gotten divorced? I assumed divorce in late 40's time was still uncommon..?
Any advice or help would be much appreciated thanks!

Just looked at the arrivals form again and just noticed where it says nearest relative in country from where you came it states 'none' although he was from a large family, all in Nottingham...Would this be a usual answer for this or maybe indicate some kind of family feud maybe? Trying to think of possible answers but failing lol!
Thanks
