I'm looking for the birth of Richard Attfield, described in most records as "Richard of Farnham", probably born in Farnham or Windlesham in 1767 (IGI record), or 1771 (deceased researcher's records). He was married to Elizabeth Watmore in Holy Trinity in Gosport in 1795, (parish records confirm), and he was recorded living in almshouses in Farnham, "on charity, not of Surrey" on the 1841 census, aged 69. He died in 1844.

With all of this information, his birth and parentage remain a mystery, although I do know that he is my 3xg grandfather, as the name Watmore was passed down as a second given name through the generations until my Uncle Cecil Watmore Coleman.

If anyone can shed a little light on this mystery, I'd be most appreciative.

Di.

My 2xg grandmother Charlotte Crawley (or possibly Crowley) married my 2x grandfather Thomas Jones on 15th Nov, 1832 in Flore Northants, both otp. After giving birth to several children she died in 1847 in Flore at the age of 39. She was therefore born about 1807/8, but I can find no record of her birth in Flore, and no Crawley/Crowleys living in Flore at the time of her marriage.

However there was a family of Crowleys, Charles and Mary nee Tebbutt married in 1806 in Hardingstone, a short distance (7.7 miles) from Flore, so would appreciate a lookup in the Hardingstone parish records for any children born to Charles and Mary. A William Crowley born about 1808 may be one of them, and Charlotte may well be another, and given the female version of Charles as her Christian name.

I've been looking for her for about 2 years so would be grateful if somebody could kindly locate her for me.

Thanks in anticipation, Di.

Hi Jan,

Thankyou so much for that information. The fact that he is listed as Richard Attfield of FARNHAM, and that one of the witnesses was Nath (Nathaniel, a much used given name in this branch of the Attfield family), confirms for me that he actually IS from Farnham and I don't need to go looking for him elsewhere.

Thanks again.

Regards, Di.

Hi Cookie,

Thankyou so much for looking at the parish records for me. I'm a little disappointed that there were no more helpful details, but I got my information from the IGI, a not necessarily reliable source, so thankyou for confirming for me that the marriage did actually take place. Now on to the search for Richard's origins!

Thankyou again. It was very kind of you to take the time to check into it for me, and much appreciated.

Regards, Di.

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Attfield/Watmore marriage 1795. Gosport.
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 19:56 BST (UK)  »
Richard Attfield born c1771 married Elizabeth Watmore in Holy Trinity Church, Gosport, on Nov 23, 1795. If anyone has access to the parish records for this area, I would very much appreciate confirmation of this marriage and any further details available.

Also, although there is a large population of Attfields in the Farnham area of Surrey where they settled, I have been unable to find any record there of Richard's birth. I would therefore also appreciate a lookup in parish records of the Gosport area for any record of him.

I'm unable to visit the record offices myself as I live in Canada, so any help would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Re: Attfield. Parish Records. Farnham.

Hi Joy,

Thankyou so much for your very quick response, and for all the useful information, especially the last note about Richard not being  from Surrey. He seems to be quite a mystery, but I shall now cease looking for him in the Farnham area, and try Hampshire where he was married.

Thankyou too for the info about the Surrey wills website. By coincidence I chanced on it last night, and there is certainly a great deal of useful information for me there too, including some Caesar wills, Nathaniels Ann being a Caesar.

Anyway thanks once again.

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Attfield. Parish Records. Farnham.
« on: Tuesday 05 July 05 01:45 BST (UK)  »
If anyone has access to the Farnham parish records, I would very much appreciate a lookup of the following members of the Attfield family.

Nathaniel Attfield was born in 1802 to Richard and Elizabeth Attfield in Farnham. I believe he married Ann Caesar in 1828 and they had 7 children, William Addecar, Frederick, James, Elizabeth Watmore, Nathaniel, Sarah Ann and Emma, all born in Farnham. Frederick is my g grandfather.

I had believed that Richard was born in Surrey, but since he married in Gosport, it is possible that he was born in Hampshire, and that they moved to Farnham at a later date.  Richard married Elizabeth Watmore in Holy Trinity, Gosport in 1795, and they settled in Farnham and had 6 children, Ann, Thomas, James, Nathaniel, George, and Frederick Watmore.

I would appreciate confimation of these facts and any other children born. It's not possible for me to visit the record offices myself as I live in Canada, so help would be very welcome.

Regards, Di.
