Hello,

Not the world's leading expert but I think that your abbreviations are "Bty" as in Artillery Battery.

Confused.com here... Still had problem using Chrome so finally tried Edge and it opened the Ancestry messages normally. Went back to Chrome and it too opened the messages normally! Any tech experts care to explain... At least I can get back to my contacts...

No change for me... Only way to see recent messages is to shrink the window contents by Ctrl- but then the text is so small that you cannot read it...

Thanks for that Cas, I will not bother trying a different browser this afternoon...
Do you mean that Ancestry actually employ human beings to answer queries that AI cannot?  ::)

World War Two / Re: Help understanding RAF record
« on: Wednesday 19 October 22 10:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi Mike,

I agree that the RAF were a little more casual than the army or navy but the Magister crashed 21 Jan and F/O Yates drowned 26 Jan so I don't think he was involved...

The record of F/O Yates death is available at the TNA Kew but has not yet been digitised so would need a visit to see what it actually says.

The ORB for 232 Squadron for Jan 1941, when it was actually equipped with Hurricanes, is available from the TNA website but does not appear to offer anything useful on F/O Yates but does confirm the crash of the Magister at Dyce.

If you Google barrage balloons you will soon get an idea, there are plenty of photos out there. As a kid I remember seeing them being used at RAF Cardington in Bedfordshire, I think by then they were used to train/drop parachutists. I also had an uncle who was a flight engineer on Wellington bombers and he told me that while training they got lost in cloud and when they exited the clouds they found themselves surrounded by barrage balloons but managed to avoid hitting them and the cables trailing from them and made it home.

I am still confused by the RAF Commands website entry, maybe Ross will spot this thread and comment.
