London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: LOE or LOWE origins, c.1796

This is not going to help a bit ! - but I would just observe that the surname LOUGH occurs in our family.  We know it as "Luff".  However on censuses it can occur as LOWE,  LUFF, and (with a bit of transcription error) as HOUGH.  So I suppose my point is that you really have to think laterally and imaginatively about what a set of letters on a census return might mean in terms of what the informant actually said.

Daughter of John Sheppard a Stevedore.
Mother : Jane Sheppard.
Registered 24th November before Henry Ashford, Registrar.

No. 103 or 108, 25th December 1880, Thomas William Baker (22)(B), a Leather Dresser, and Caroline Hazeltine (20)(S).
Fathers : Thomas Baker (Deceased) a Farmer and Joseph Hazeltine a Brush Maker.
After Banns by Matthew Campbell, Curate.
Caroline made x her mark.
Witnesses : Edwin State made x his mark and Hannah State signed herself.
