Technical Help / Re: Hotmail
« on: Wednesday 26 April 17 20:22 BST (UK)  »
I have had a Hotmail account for approaching twenty years now. It has always been relatively slow as being web-based, connection speed and other factors come into play prominently.

However in its Outlook guise there is something else. There is now a script to furnish an advertising sidebar on R.H.S. If like me you run an ad-blocker it complains bitterly and takes an age to do anything. This I reckon is a deliberate ploy to get you to accept all the b****y ads or pay them (M$) for "ad-free Hotmail". They'd better not hold their breath waiting for me!

Gmail is now my 'primary' too and I only use Hotmail/Outlook for commercial contacts that are likely to result in a welter of advertising.

Hi Martin,
Welcome to RootsChat. As I wouldn't want to reveal details on the open web, make one more post and then I can contact you via a Personal message (PM). I have photographs too you might be interested in.

Thank you for getting in touch.

The Lighter Side / Re: Your Genealogy Claim to Fame?

It has to be remembered that Scottish Clan names were originally applied to Kith (supporters, adherents, gang members, depending on how you look at it  :o ) as well as Kin (the family of the Clan chief).

Technical Help / Re: HTML font with Firefox

I'd agree completely with arthurk. There is something of a learning curve with CSS but well worth it in the long run.

Hi Malcolm,
According to my reference book which is now quite a bit out of date, <BASEFONT> is a tag that is only fully recognised by Internet Explorer, the font name and color attributes especially. Firefox prides itself on being standards compliant. Enough said I think.  ???

I suggest you alter your approach to CSS to get the ouput you want.

The Common Room / Re: Graveyard protocol for uploading

I have to pose the rhetorical question," If the family didn't want their relatives' place of interrment known and seen, then why did they place a headstone there in the first place?".

My grand-dad had the middle name of Elson which had been passed down through about 4 or 5 generations and turns out to be the maiden surname of one of his ancestors.  I don't know why he didn't use it on any of his 4 sons though.....

Don't you? I remember a kid I knew from primary school and Sea Scouts who was always known as "Elson" for no real reason. He was quite happy with this until it was pointed out to him that it was the brand name of a contemporary (1950's and 60's) portable chemical toilet.  ;D ;D ;D

Technical Help / Re: I Pad
« on: Thursday 24 March 16 16:11 GMT (UK)  »
The other alternative for your Ipad is to convert your tree data to a web site, transfer to the Ipad by whatever means are available and use a browser to reference the tree. Most FH software has such a conversion facility - some are better at it than others and more compact. I use a little bit of Freeware called Gedmill. For each individual Gedmill displays a three generation tree and all that individual's details and notes. It ain't perfect but has proved very useful in the three years I've been using it.
