The Common Room / Shipping record for SS Gilroy
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 11:14 BST (UK)  »
Hello
My 2 times gt grandfather, David Whyte, died in 1867 and was a sailmaker onboard the SS Gilroy. The death certificate has him dying in St Helena but I have looked on line at the death records for St Helena and there is no record there.

I wonder if he died onboard the SS Gilroy while stopped at St Helena for resupply and they buried him at sea.

Can anyone help to where I can go to find where he is buried? If the ships logs exist, where would they be kept.

The SS Gilroy was a steamship ans registered in the port of Dundee. It was owned by the Gilroy brothers a very wealthy jute manufacturer family who branched out into shipping.

Technical Help / Re: Software for strays
« on: Friday 14 May 21 15:55 BST (UK)  »
Well Zaph, it could be all of the above but MI is for Monumental Inscriptions. It's what's written on gravestones.

All professions, hobbies, trades, texts etc all have their abbreviations, we're just the same ;D

Technical Help / Re: Software for strays

Hi
Thank you to you both. Did not realise how complicated setting up a database for strays could be. I am going to have a serious think of how I want this to look like before I go any further and I will have a chat with the people responsible for maintaining the website to see what can be done.

Thank you again

Technical Help / Re: Software for strays

Thank you for your input. I have started to collect strays and some are MI. My question is about the content of the inscription.

If I give each entry one line, I can then place a link with each entry to a database that will give extra information.

I will start with the spreadsheet as that makes sense. The database will come later.

Thank you again, nothing better than a plan.

Technical Help / Software for strays
« on: Sunday 09 May 21 18:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello
I'm looking for a software package that can deal with strays, not the surname :) but the people who stray from their original area.

The software will have to deal with all the details, like names, dates, places and references.

Do I use a spreadsheet database? I am hoping to update the present database onto our FHS website as the present software is a bit out of date.

I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Re: Symington Coupar Angus
« on: Wednesday 08 March 17 19:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My husbands family tree has a "Symington". Her name is Margaret Horsburgh Symington, married James Slimming 24 Aug 1900 in Glasgow. Her parents were William Symngton and Flora Osborne.

Her address at the time of marriage is 244 St George's Road, Glasgow.

I'm sorry that I don't have more information on her but they are very much twigs on my husbands tree.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Re: William Watson born circa 1854

Hi ev

Yeah looks like them. My supposition is that Isabella went home to Dowally to have her first child and then went back to David as he worked/lived mainly in Angus and between Dundee and Perth.

I discovered through Tay Valley FHS another person connected to Margaret and Henry GILMOUR but they denied any knowledge of my William connected to Margaret.
