Cheshire / Re: Cheshire (Wirral) Electoral Roll records - about 1960

Went to Chester Archives and they were so helpful, getting various Electoral Roll books out for us and sorting out large scale maps.  Great venue, just off the main streets.

Going to try Birkenhead Library next time and see whether they have anything else, and if the parking is easier.

Thanks for that.  I have actually booked in at the Chester Archives where they hold the years I want, so am hopeful I can find what I'm looking for.  My local library had nothing and Chester is almost as close as Birkenhead.  But I will certainly remember that for the next time.

Thanks,  Pam

Yes I have the address in 1961, but don't know where I can find the ERs.

Want to see if they stayed there into the 1960s or moved away;  and how long they had been there.

Cheshire / Cheshire (Wirral) Electoral Roll records - about 1960
« on: Tuesday 19 March 24 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
I would love to look at the ER for Wirral for about 1960.  Think that was Cheshire then, not Merseyside.

Does anyone know where I could see them?  Chester Archive?

Alternatively I would like to see a Kelly's or similar Directory for around that time.  Chester Archive, maybe?

Ideally it would be good to search online but so far I haven't found any digitised copies.

Thanks,

Pam

Lincolnshire / Re: 1851 - Crowland / Croyland - North Street, Pitts Yard

In this case it details the road (North Street) but it doesn't say in which direction he goes, and I wondered if he started at the North (river) or south (bridge) end.

"All that part of the town of Croyland comprised of North Street (both sides) with the Courts appertaining with the Brewery House and cottages on the North Bank contiguous also the Boat and Horses Public House on said bank".

Knowing the direction might help me identify the poss position of my relatives' house.

Lincolnshire / 1851 - Crowland / Croyland - North Street, Pitts Yard

In 1851 I have family living in North Street, Croyland, next to Pitts Yard.

Looking at the census it would appear that North Street had several "Yards"  or Courts?  The census identifies 165 households on North Street.  I wonder which way the enumerator walked, he did both sides of North Street, did he start by the river, or by the Bridge??

Just wondering if there is a map showing the location of the Yards?  Or when they got replaced by other properties?  The names would seem to reflect the owners?

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Re: Spalding, The Crescent and Station Steet

Yes, I think this supports my thoughts that 17 The Crescent as my grandfather's Tailor & Outfitters shop from the 1920's, into the 1930's was not in The Crescent as we now know it today.

A notice of 1921 says he is taking over the business of G T Hurn in 1921 'at the Crescent'. (George Thomas)
An ad of 1922 and 1923  says A1 Crescent
An ad of 1926 gives address of 17 The Crescent "through the Hole in Wall Passage"
An ad of 1933 gives his address as 17 Station Street  "near the Regent theatre".  A photo of the Theatre shows it on Sheep Market, and gives its address as Sheep Market.
An ad of 1938 just shows The Crescent.

1955 is the first (I could find) of his address as 14 The Crescent - now a hairdressers opposite the end of Priory Road.

So it looks as if he moved his business between 1938 and 1955.

I would love to find out when that move took place and when he started trading at 14 The Crescent, just opposite Priory Road.  Did he close down in the intervening period, or continue trading??

Thanks - I have now found the advert on FindMyPast, Spalding Guardian 7 Dec 1929.

I am still wondering if 17 The Crescent  (where he is in the 1920's) is the same property as 17 Station Street?

In 1935 there is an ad which says 14 The Crescent (the property I remember him being at till 1964) so I guess he re-locates then after some financial problems.

"There's an advert in the Spalding Guardian 7 Dec 1929 that reads
"We have removed to new premises at 17 Station Street, Spalding, L Williams Tailor and Outfitter""

Thanks for that.  Sorry but I can't find it. (Find My Past)

In 1921 there is an advert saying he has purchased the shop previously owned by Mr Hurn in The Crescent and there are adverts for him at A1 The Crescent and 17 The Crescent.

Then in 1930 his address is given as "17 Station Street (opposite the Regent Theatre)".

I have found lots of his adverts with shop address of Station Street and a Closing Down Sale at that address in 1934, followed by creditors meetings in that year.  In 1934 he announces he is now at 14 The Crescent, and he is there until he retires in 1964.

Looking at a current map of the area I am now wondering if the street names got changed and 17 Station Street and 17 The Crescent are actually the same address??

Any thoughts, it's confusing me!
