Tyrone / Re: Gortin New Roman Catholic Cemetery

Hi,
I know that this thread is Years old, but I came across it just prior to a visit to Gortin

So We visited St Patrick’s graveyard and there in the corner was a grave for Dudgeon, exactly as described.
But it had no inscription at all.
There is a marble plate but no text on it. No sign of stuck on letters since gone, but then it is over 100 years old

So I’m assuming that this is the one, but cannot be certain
I found only one other Dudgeon, but I think it was a Mary and much more recent.

Hi

I am the gt gt granddaughter of Edward dowzard and Mary Anne cotterhill. Their daughter Eileen was my fathers mother. Do you have any more information, I believe he was a police man in Dublin harbor

Edward Dowzard was born about 1863. He was employed at the Ballast office of the Ports & Docks board, Dublin, as a porter and as a housekeeper.

I have three children of the second marriage:
Martha, born 8 Apr 1899, Dublin, later known as Mabel, she was married 8 Jan 1919 to Paul W Davis, born Kennebunk ME, US Navy.
Eileen Dorothy born about 1901 (corrected elsewhere on this thread to 1903 - possible twin?)
Elsie Alexandra born 3 Jun 1903

Welcome to Rootschat
Going that far back, much of my knowledge comes from the other contributors here.
Edward Dowzer b1819, d1889, had a grandfather and great-grandfather both called William, which may signify a connection to your William. Keeping the same forename in the family is a trait. There are many many Edwards!
I have Edward (1819) with a brother George (of Kilavaney), who was the father of  the Edward Dowzard (b1856 and a policeman) who married Mary Anne Ferguson. Their names can be found on monument inscriptions, but I have no source listed for the connection of the brothers Edward and George.
Not at all impossible that there was another brother.

Wicklow / Re: School in Delgany 1901

Hi, and welcome to Rootschat
I haven’t looked at this one for a long time!

The building is interesting, because in 1901 census it has 13 rooms and (iirc) 6 front windows. I have not been able to find the equivalent house in 1911 census. Owned by a richard Buckley as you say, who does not appear in 1911, but a Mrs Buckley does. I assume he died, and she gained ownership of the properties but I haven’t checked.

Hope1986, describes a school on the Kendlestone road, but in the 1940s, but I don’t think this can have been the same school if it wasn’t there in 1911
There are not many buildings in the old 19c town land of Delgany, and indeed there are not so many listed on the census of 1901, but I don’t know of any way to match buildings on the census to location on the ground ( except perhaps going in to Griffiths and checking out the Buckley properties) which I haven’t done.
There is a school shown on the old map, but up by Bellevue, and another two schools in Delgany itself (presumably one COI and one RC). I’m still confused

His army file is still held by the MoD per the Freedom of Information disclosures:

AOP000535473   File   P82468   COLE-HAMILTON WM   1883-04-03

You can apply for a copy which will cost £30 and there is currently a very long wait:

https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/apply-for-someone-elses-records

This is interesting.
The MOD site says that army records are available from 1921 onwards, but not WW1, (which it says are held by National Archives)
But you’ve been able to find the MOD record number.

It’s a £30 punt and currently a 12 month wait. Should I just give it a go?

His other number is AOP000535473, which is the Ministry of Defence Reference Number.

No! I was not aware. Is there any significance to the letters in that number.

He is not listed in WO339 or 374 under any combination of his names. There are several of his Cole-Hamilton relatives.
From TNA I have only found his medal card.
