What a great site this is.

There are so many that are so willing to help, enlighten and educate people such as myself who are not so wise in certain areas. I really need to thank all of you for sharing your knowledge.

Kind regards Sharon

Wow! :o

 Mystery solved. Thanks Christine.

I didn't think that WWII would come into the equation as this makes him 48 years on enlistment.
Now I have to wonder whether there was a cut off age and what it might have been and did the age have a great bearing on the role that was undertaken. One question always seems to lead to another.

Thanks Christine

Thank you Trish

Like you I feel I am only just getting to know them now and that is probably unfortunate for all of the 'secret keepers' that have gone before me. :o

I will take your advice and contact the War Memorial as I have found their information not very user friendly. I will get great satisfaction when it all comes together.

Kind regards
Sharon

Hi trish

I'm sorry if I sounded a little harsh or uncaring, but if the truth be known I have great empathy and respect for our service men. You must feel very honored to have known them all. My own father served in Korea (Navy) and he is very reluctant to talk about this time. Therefore, I don't push it, for they are the only ones who have experienced such trauma.

Hi Shassan

If he was in the Australian Army you should be able to get a complete copy of his service record at www.naa.gov.au (apologies if you already have this). The information from the Australian War Memorial may also help
http://www.awm.gov.au/research/

Trish

Thanks Trish

I have viewed His service record but the hand writing is very difficult to decipher, and when I can I don't understand what it is telling me. I am a novice when it comes to armed forces although I'm finding it very interesting. Can't wait to learn more.

Hiya Shassan,

Can you post  his full name (middle name as well if he had one) plus army service number if you have it as it may well help in getting more information for you. By the sound of it he was transferred from one regiment to another at some stage if this was so pinp[ointing exactly when it happened (if indeed it did) might be a problem but post away and you never know what might turn up.

Hello old rowley

Thank you for your reply. I really must apologize for not replying earlier but unfortunately I had a bit of an accident and ended up with concussion, but am on deck now.
His full name is Andrew Joseph Evans, service no 4832. I have have viewed his full service record (all 22 pages) but have difficulty trying to comprehend the writing and the meanings.
I think life would be far easier if our ancestors discussed their lives rather than hide it. But I suppose they had their reasons.

Hello All

I have recently come across the grave of my husbands Grandfather. It reads "Sapper Royal Engineers". However I am now a little confused as his service papers state that he was a Private in the 4th Pioneers Battalion until his discharge in 1918. Does anyone know if this is one of the same?
Admittedly, I have only researched via the internet, but have found nothing to explain my confusion. According to family history he was a light horseman. I must apologise for my ignorance, but can any one shed some light this  ???

Hi Trish

Even though Morton Bay was still part of NSW at the time, I had to wonder whether NSW archives would hold the records or QLD. Its good to know that I'm on the right track. Thank you.
