I wish I could be more certain about John's birth yr. 1870 Cenus says abt 1836, 1880 says about 1837, death record submitted by physican a good week after he died in 1883 that John was born in 1838. Dr may have done the math from John's age at time of death, which would mean between 1837 or 1839, depending on where his actual bday fell w/in the year. Gravestone only says, "Papa," no dates. When I do a search, I use the year 1837 + or - 2yrs, which is probably as close as I'll get.

The birth location, also found on the death record, looks like it begins w/Pr and ends w/ton. Could be read as Pruiston, Priuston, Prinston, none of which exist. And the mention of Manchester is confusing, since Preston & Manchester are two different places. Born in one, maybe corresponding w/family members in the other, according to the grieving widow's response to the doctor. Yikes.

I found their names on John's marriage record, which doesn't ensure their accuracy either, since these records aren't error-free.

I have also wondered if William was his father's middle name, since two of John's sons, including my gr-grandfather, went by their middle names. I found George & Margaret Hellum w/ son John of the right age in Liverpool. William George? I'm also looking at Williams w a son John and wife of a different name--maybe a second marriage.

I also found William and Margaret Hulme w/son John born c1839. Does Hulme=Helm?

I really appreciate your help. Onward...

How nice to get such a quick reply. Thank you.

Both death records just say Ireland as place of birth. US citizenship papers indicate Dublin, but are confusing since Cork is also mentioned. I have not been able to find their names on the civil registration, nor did a professional I hired several years ago. I found William Molloy & wife Mary Molly on a ship's record, assuming it was them. I also checked the church records in Bridgeport, CT. Not there either. The other possibility could be that they were married in New York where they landed. Or if the story about running away together is true, could they have used false names?

I looked at several birth records at RootsIreland, but kind of expensive. At the LDS site, I found a Mary Kelly, daughter of Wm & Bridget, born Ap 1843 in Roscommon. Actual date is wrong, but this could have been baptism date, rather than birth date as most of the records are.

I just keep hoping siblings of Mary Kelly & Wm Molloy, right parents, right timeframe, will turn up.

All suggestions welcome.

John J Helm born c1838 in England to Wm & Margaret Helm. His death record in Wisconsin is hard to read--says place of birth is Pres???? Manchester England. DNA test of male descendent proved he was of the Lancashire Helms but I cannot find him on UK censuses from 1841-1861 w/any spelling variation of Helm. By 1868 he was in Wisconsin working as a spinner, which is another clue to his having come from the Manchester area, where there were many mills. His sons were Joseph Frederick Helm, James Edward Helm, & George John Helm. Maybe clues to his sibling's names?  I would really appreciate some help.

Need help with Molloy & Kelly ancestors. I'm at a dead end. William Molloy, born 23 Apr, 1843, to John & Mary Molloy, maybe Dublin, and his wife, Mary Kelly, born 9 Jun, 1846, to William & Bridget Kelly, also maybe Dublin. They were married when they arrived in the US in 1870, but cannot find a record of that. Family legend has it that William Molloy worked for Mary Kelly's family, maybe w/the horses. They fell in love and ran away to be married. This could be complete fiction. When they immigrated to the US, they lived in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Their daughter, Mary Molloy, was born there in 1872; a Mary 'Maloy' was one of the two sponsors. Martin Daley the other.

I hope this rings a bell for someone.
