Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Helen McLeod? Help with date

The picture on the ball is surrounded by flags and surmounted by a crown and look, as far as I can make out, like King George Vl and Queen Elizabeth.
How sad that she died so young but that more or less pinpoints the date to the one you estimated - 1939.

Bennet who married Henry Cavell was indeed an Austin. Bennett is the first entry in the 1716 register and she is listed as 'widow' so Henry must have died prior to 1716 but I can find no record of his death so far. There was a Mary Cavell buried later in 1716 and the name is recoded as 'My' while Henry was traditionally recorded as 'Hy' so that might explain he possible confusion.
Can't find Bennet being baptised in Deal nor the marriage of Thomas and Elizabeth Austin so presumably they were from a different parish.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: What is this token?

Interesting, Josey. The word is. I suspect Hercules as the disc shows him holding a club. Hercules was traditionally shown carrying a club and wearing a cloak made of animal skin.
The whole assembly looks to be home-made. Not brass, as you say, possibly brass plated or pinchbeck (attempt at reproducing gold) but the links look to be copper. It appears your uncle came upon the discs and thought enough of them to mount them on whatever was to hand.

Agree - a public school Cadet corps with trophies. Taken 1890's to 1920 ish. Wide date range as the Eton collars were used over many years as was the early style of army uniform.

I was at school in the 1950's and we all looked very much like that. The relaxed poses indicate a date later than the 30's so I would go for 50's or early 60's.

I would have said the first photo was late 1800's and the second one quite a few years later, but I'm having trouble reconciling the two pictures as being the same house. Are you certain about this, Falleneagle?

Just to add my two pennorth - if the young man was born in 1911 and looks about twenty, give or take, in the picture, that would make the photo late 20's to early 30's.

Agree with Carol - around 1910. My limited knowledge of antipodean architecture tells me the house was about twenty to fifty years old at the time. Built around the 1870's - 90's.
