You could try the "What Are The Odds?" tool on the DNA Painter website - you can experiment placing yourself at different positions in a family tree - it then generates probability scores based on the cM data values entered.

So, the last time I checked, Ancestry had the biggest autosomal matching database followed by 23andme. Then it's MyHeritage and LivingDNA.

I should point out that there's a big element of luck involved with DNA databases and you don't know who's in a database until you submit your sample.  If funds allow N could buy a new test from 23andme and upload her Ancestry raw data to LivingDNA  & pay the unlock fee. (I've not found 23andme or LivingDNA as "genealogy friendly" as there is often much less info on your matches when compared to Ancestry and MyHeri - but if I got a crucial cousin match I wouldn't complain!).

HOWEVER - you may not need any more tests if your result with R helps and provides more shared matches to work with!  Try building R's tree backwards and sideways to try and find the link.

Hi Chris,

A few suggestions:

Does N have her DNA on all the major DNA databases? (I've found some matches only test with one company)

Have you tried inputting N's DNA values into the "What Are The Odds" tool on the DNA Painter website?

Have you tried figuring out who N's Grandparents are first - are there any DNA matches to her potential father's mother's ancestral lines for example...

I don't know how long you've been working with DNA but here's a link with resources on searching for close relatives -

Hi Andy

Great news!
Congratulations on this DNA breakthrough after months of various DNA tests and hard work.
You are an inspiration to those of us still working on mystery DNA clusters and matches!

Here are some statistics from ISOGG on the probability that 2 cousins will share enough DNA for the relationship to be detected:

Hi

For some fresh cousin matches Ancestry DNA raw data can also be uploaded to FTDNA, MyHeritage & LivingDNA - there is a unlock fee for each but it is usually cheaper than buying a brand new test. Or wait for a time when there is a sale on. 23andme requires a buying a brand new test.

Hi Deb,

Is your DNA on all the main databases?  ie Ancestry, MyHeritage, FTDNA, 23andme & LivingDNA.

If funds allow it's worth trying them all as different people have their autosomal DNA on different databases. (There are sales from time to time & some sites allow uploads which are usually cheaper).

Here's an info article -

(apologies if you've tried this already)

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Can yDNA help find earlier family

Hi,

Yes you are correct, Y-DNA can trace further back in time, thousands of years in fact.
As you probably already know, only males can take Y-DNA tests & it traces a man's father's line, his grandfather, gt grandfather etc etc.

Autosomal DNA tests by comparison can be taken by males & females and reach back around 500 years or so - they test all ancestral lines of the family tree and are cheaper to buy.

There is lots of helpful info on the Rootschat DNA board -
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/ancestral-family-tree-dna-testing/

I did a search on the FTDNA website for the surname Winn/Wynn and there is a Y-DNA surname project for Winn (+ variants) - see these links:

https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/winn/about

https://www.familytreedna.com/public/winn?iframe=yresults

There are 440 members of the Winn/Wynn surname project which is pretty good. If you are male & only interested in your direct paternal line of Winn then a Y-DNA test from FTDNA is worth a shot.

As long as there are no non-paternity events in your paternal line back to the 1700s hopefully your DNA should match one or more members of this project.

An Autosomal DNA test from: Ancestry/MyHeritage/LivingDNA/23andme may bring some near or distant cousin matches on the Winn/Wynn line which might also help.
