Regarding the marriage between James Lees and Elizabeth J Berk,  if that happens to be them,  perhaps the name Berk could have been written as a phonetic version of Burke,  a common name in Ireland.  I have never come across the name Berk in Ireland.

If John was Irish,  a strong alternative spelling of his name would be Kearns or Kerins.  Put a Scottish accent to that and it could easily sound and be written down as Cairns.

I see Redmond as the most likely.
As regards James,  it looks like       .olan as you suggest.  Nolan, Tolan or Folan worth checking,  the most common being Nolan.

Could I recommend that you extend your research to the spelling '' Keogh ''  which is a much more common family name in the New Ross area.

As his Social Security registration shows him as Scottish,  have you considered Kilmarnock in Scotland as a possibility.  To the stranger,  Kilmallock and Kilmarnock sound very similar.
