Carmarthenshire / Prince of Saxe Coburg pub
« on: Wednesday 13 October 21 05:42 BST (UK)  »
One of my ancestors, Henry Jones, was innkeeper of the Prince of Saxe Coburg pub in Carmarthenshire in the 1820s.
I am trying to locate the pub which I thought was in llandarrog but can find no reference.
Help in locating it would be appreciated

Thanks CoIC and ShaunJ
Those references seem to pin down Mary
As a result I have been back and trawled parish register via FindMyPast and am wondering if I have found Daniel
There is a Baptism for a Daniel John date 29/4/1800 in Llanartheny with father David.
Could this be the Daniel with the patronymic name John for Jones?  I think i'm right that there was a switch from patronymics in the early 1800s
Only trouble is the gravestone says 21/7/180? aged 8 months.
I'm wondering if its possible the baptism was some months after the birth?
He could have been born right at the beginning of the year which gives near enough 8 months.

Following up on the patronymic idea perhaps the father was known as David John in the records so would have been born around 1785.
Can't see an obvious result at first look on FindMyPast.
I suppose I could also be making an error in assuming David was of Danyrallt and born Llanartheny because the place was only identified on Daniel's name.
Any ideas would be welcome and thanks again
Ian

There is a gravestone in Llanarthne churchyard, Carmarthenshire, for
Daniel Jones son of David Jones of Dan yr Allt, in this Parish who departed this life, July 21 180? aged 8 months. (the last number on the date is indistinct)
also to the memory of Mary of the above named who departed this life January 1826 aged 1? years (again there is an indistinct number on the age)
Also to the memory of David Jones who departed this life June 24 1851 died age 65 years
I've searched Parish records on FindMyPast but can not find these deaths recorded.
Is there an possible reason for this or should I look elsewhere?

Carmarthenshire / Re: Children of Henry Jones abt 1810

Thanks Br1gau
I've found Cwm - in the right area and the district thought fits with the snip.
I hadn't thought of idea that parents might change their minds! To add some credibility it's perhaps worth noting that Henry's father was a David Jones. Perhaps he got miffed that Henry wasn't following the custom of naming first born son after his own father and objected! Whatever, I'm going to work on the basis that the first John and David are the same person.
I've been pursuing the other children and am disconcerted that there is a second earlier Daniel baptised in Llanartheny Parish 23/1/1831 son of Henry Jones and Mary Davies - he of Cwmcoch and she of Trallwm. Identical parents names and both names stated which (am I right?) suggests they weren't married?
My Henry and Mary were definitely married in Llanartheny 6/10/1827
Can there really have been another Henry and Mary with same surnames in Llanartheny at the same time?
Ouch! all seems confusing

Thanks very much Br1gau
Can you tell me where you found these - it might help me search for others
Also I am puzzled about the first John 1828. I see you looked for death presumably because of the later John birth. Can I just check with you that first John finding? Is there any way of corroborating that it was a John?
I ask this because from the 41 census return there is a David age 13 (so born 1827/8) in Henry's family and I thought I had found him age 32 (b.Llannon) in 1861 living at Smith Shop Berwick Llanelly and then again age 42 (b. Llannon) in 1871 as a blacksmith at Hendy Road, Gwilly Inn, Llanedy. Also possibly as a boarder b. Llannon in Llanelly in 1851.
I've been looking up Cwm Mynydd mawr to see if that gave any clues but there is a Care Home called that there now - who knows what it was in 1828.
Thanks again
Ian

Carmarthenshire / Children of Henry Jones abt 1810
« on: Friday 17 September 21 05:26 BST (UK)  »
Henry Jones married Mary Davies (David) in Llanartheny  6/10/1827
I am trying to complete records for their nine children.
Using ages estimated from census returns where the children were all stated as born Llannon I have
David 1828
Mary 1830
John 1832
Ann 1834
William 1837
Daniel 1841 (have cert for him born 24/11/1841 Penyrheol Llannon
Eleazor 1843 (have cert for him born 20/3/1843 Penyrheol Llannon
Thomas 1845 ( Have cert for him 29/8/1845 born Penyrheol Llannon
Elizabeth 1852
I can't find the others and wonder if the earlier births were perhaps not in Llannon
Can anyone help with the remaining birth dates and places please

Carmarthenshire / David Jones of Danyrallt Llanartheny who died 1837
« on: Sunday 12 September 21 05:50 BST (UK)  »
I am writing up some earlier research on my Jones family which I pursued with a lot of help here on Rootschat. That research led to some conclusions on the family of Henry Jones birth about 1810 in Llanartheny. His Grandfather was almost certainly David Jones who died at Danyyrallt, Llanartheny on 11/7/1837 with probate 17/7/1837. However I can't find an age at death for David and hence birth date. Can anyone help with this?

Glamorganshire / Walter Thomas Hunt/Jones name change in 1891
« on: Tuesday 12 January 21 01:49 GMT (UK)  »
Am trying to find Walter Thomas Jones/Hunt (born 27 May 1868 Bridgewater Somerset with father Alfred Hunt) in the 1891 census probably in Pontypridd Wales.
Walter was my grandfather and I know he walked from Woolavington, Somerset to Wales for work.
The last record I have for him in Somerset was with his Hunt family age 13 in Woolavington 1881 census.
What makes searching for him complicated is he changed his name to Jones at some point
He married Sarah Jones on 4/8/1891 in Pontypridd - gave his name as Walter Jones, a collier. residence Llwynpia with father Henry Thomas Jones. I believe the father's name was fictitious.
With the marriage so soon after the 1891 census he must have already moved to Wales from Somerset so should appear somewhere in Wales and probably in the Rhondda.
He does appear in the 1901 census again claiming he was born in Wales but in 1911 he fessed up and gave his birthplace as Bridgewater, so I know I have the right man!
His eldest sister Mary Ann (Hunt) married Albion Wheadon in 1876 in Bridgewater and had moved to Wales in time for the 1881 census when she was living at 22 Rhys St Ystrad (close to Llwynpia). So Walter probably followed her and Albion to Wales but he was not living in her home in 1881.
I am trying to find a reason for his name change and hope the 1881 census might give a clue but can't find him under either name.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Glamorganshire / Re: Ynyshir schools in 1916 to 1925 era

Thanks Roy
I have done what you suggest and found a document ref ER49/1 which is the infants log book for those years- should give me the info
However unless I’m missing something, I can’t go any further on line - can’t actually see the records.
Is that right or is there something I can do to see the details?
If I can’t, it looks as if I will have to wait until the archives open again and then hope for help via email since I am in NZ
Thanks for getting me this far!
Ian
