The Common Room / Family Bible - James Harrison marr. Kate Higginbotham 1862
« on: Wednesday 16 October 19 22:38 BST (UK)  »
Family Bible as above - James Harrison born 1835 Wakefield and Kate (I'm pretty sure Higginbotham) born 1843 Sheffield.  There are dates for their births and for the two children, and for James' parents and his siblings, if anyone is interested.  Interestingly, the Bible was taken to the USA and Kate brought it back again.

The Common Room / Re: Pub licences
« on: Friday 28 June 19 17:38 BST (UK)  »
The only thing I can think of is that while waiting for the new licence the hopeful landlord treated the pub as a pot house (can't remember the dates, but 19thC), only serving beer.  A public house down the road from me, when first built, couldn't get a full licence, because of local objections, so for a long time only traded as a pot house.

Parish registers will tell you about the funeral service, but I take it not necessarily where the deceased was buried.  But the church will have a list of its burials.  The Mansfield RC church had its graveyard open until 1906, so if Catholic they might well be buried there.  The CofE churches, if they had a graveyard, then by the 1870s some might be full, hence council run cemeteries.  So, I can only suggest you work through all the possibilities one by one and tick them off. Incidentally, you might find it a good idea to post this on the Notts board to see if anyone there has any ideas.
Good hunting

Could they have been members of a non-conformist chapel with a small graveyard?  A friend asked me to help with her tree - I found the people she had lost were buried in a long closed baptist chapel, and were now under a substantial amount of concrete, with second hand cars on top.  The local family history centre hopefully might come up with records for chapels in the Mansfield area with graveyards.

I have a book on Bishops' Transcripts and Marriage Licences, Bonds and Allegations, by Jeremy Gibson, published by the Federation of Family History Societies.  Basically, you need to know which diocese your church was in, at the time they were born, married or died.  Surviving BTs will then be in the appropriate record office.
Please PM me if I can help.

My 2 x great grandfather was prosecuted for this .  He was using a spring balance which can stretch over time so they accepted it was unintentional.  He was still fined, mind.  I expect he soon bought a new balance scale.

The Common Room / Re: Cant Find William Turner Mother ?

I'd have thought if Susan is 62 in the 1901 Census, then William is probably also adopted!  I've found a family in 1871 in Ryehope, which seems to be that of John with a first wife, Mary, and children including a son William born about 1865.
