Apologies, Amanda. I can see from your other posts that you are very familiar with SP  ::)

Nothing obvious then for him  :-\

Hi there

The best source of info for BMDs and wills is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

However, I cannot easily see a death entry for him in 1857 in Argyll or a will entry. Have a look, it is free to search and look at initial results.

He could have died at sea? Also, maybe the actual death didn't take place in Argyll. There are some deaths showing on SP for Duncan McDougalls in 1857. Some entries include a mother's maiden name which might help.

Have a look at this site here www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=donald

First name variants were very common (some still are). This is my favourite site for checking out possibility. Some are obvious, some less so.

Hi Michael and Carole

Could there be a mistrascription on the first name  :-\ John's mother's maiden name was Anderson? There is this entry on SP:

Ann Pitcairn, aged 56. Mother's mm Anderson. Death year 1865. Ref 424/1 145. Death in Dunfermline Burgh, Fife.

There is a possible Davd Sturrock that might fit. From the 1851 census:

David Sturrock 26 Ship's Carpenter b. Aberdeen
Barbara Sturrock 25 b. Inverkeillor, Forfarshire

Address: Lady Bridge, Arbroath

This couple married in 1851 in Arbroath in 1851 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTRJ-KZ6

They had at least four children but two died young;

Elizabeth 1853 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XBCM-GZ4

Alexander 1854 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XBCZ-331

James 1856 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYBH-QJN died in 1857

Lavinia 1858 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XY5V-T5Q died in 1858

Barbara in the 1861 census:

Mrs Darid Sturrock 34 lodging house keeper b. Arbroath
Elisabeth Sturrock 8 b. Arbroath
Alexander Sturrock 6 b. Arbroath
Elisabeth Wallace 66 mother b. Arbroath
Andrew Lowson 18 boarder
John Donaldson 24 boarder

Address: 69 Lady Coan, Arbroath

I can't check Barbara's marital status on the transcript I am looking at to check whether she shows as a widow...

Hi sceahlott

There are a number of references to Jean Armour being sent off by parents to stay with family in Paisley.

It may not be family on the Armour (father James Armour) side though. I found this google book entry (link shrunk) www.rootschat.com/links/01l2s/ Should Auld Acquaintance: Discovering the Woman Behind Robert Burns

There is mention there of Jean, pregnant by Robert Burns, being sent off to the home of her Uncle Andrew, a carpenter, and Aunt Elizabeth, her mother's oldest sister (mother Mary Smith) in Paisley.

There is more detail there. Book very readable!

Hi there  :)

In respect of newspaper searches:

The main free Glasgow newspaper archives available currently to view online are for the Glasgow Herald, issues range from 1800 - 1990. More issues continue to be added. The only problem is that you cannot search editions by key words, so you have to know what dates to check before starting a search. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC - simply add year for search to see what issues may be available (insert a year in 'Date' box).

Also, Evening Times - http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2mus-XyGPC0C

You have a death date so this should help you searching specifically for a few days after her death date.

I also have him married to an Ann Jane but she seems to have been married before and goes by either Geddes or Rowan. Not sure which is maiden name and which is previous married name. ( Malloy at the moment is not confirmed).
Another wife was Joan Donaldson (nee Campbell). married in 1895. Does this help anyone and can any  further light be throw on the subject?

Her maiden name looks to be Rowan (and variants). Marriage details here for them https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGCD-ZJR
