I haven't been on here for years, as I lost interest in family history for a while, and other things got in the way.
Fascinated to read all this, as I too am descended from John and Lizzie Clamp, through their daughter Florence (my gran).
All the facts everyone on here have posted are correct, thank you.  I have pm'ed the OP and hope he will get in touch.
Be interested to hear from anyone else who is also researching the Clamp family.  They came to Bucks from Fersfield, Norfolk via Old Newton, Suffolk, and the menfolk all ended up working in the railway works.  Lizzie was descended from a huge family of Cheneys in Cublington.
My gran lived in Caledonian Road until her death in 1984.

Yes things have moved on a bit since then.  I'm pretty much all censused up now!

Thanks very much for helping anyway,

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: 41 census or parish register lookup, Clamp of Fersfield

Hi Cathy,

Just looked up the origin of Clamp, and got this:

"Possibly from middle English for clamp, iron band or brace, or a name for a smith who made clamps and braces".

Did you mean Stow in Suffolk, because my Clamps lived not far from there in Old Newton.

I would love to find a connection.  My grandmother was a Clamp too!

Hi Cathy,

I doubt if there is a connection, my Clamps are from Fersfield which is in the south of the county near the Suffolk border, and N and S Creake are in the north, but you never know.

The only thing I know for sure is that my John Clamp was born in about 1791 in Fersfield, and that he may be the son of Thomas Clamp.  It is possible that family moved there from somewhere else.  I have not ever seen the parish registers and there is nothing helpful on the IGI.

Good luck and Happy Christmas down under!  :D

Thanks for that Steph.  I will add it to the enormous pile of info I have and one day, who knows, it may all link together.

Since my original post, I have found the parents of the family of Cooks who regularly changed to Carwell and Carwell Cook.  They were John and Charlotte Carvell!! They had all their children in Wavendon, Bucks.

I haven't found their marriage, so don't know if Charlotte was a Cook.  I haven't found the birth/bpt of John in Wavendon or Bucks.

In recent weeks I have found some interesting entries on the IGI that are a possibility:
Daniel Carvel who married Catherine Cook, 9.11.1769 in Lilbourne, Northants.  They had a son, John in 1770.

And Richard Carvel and Mary Cook who had a son John in 1769 - in Market Harborough, Leics.

Both are 40 miles or so from Wavendon ( a quick nip up the M1 now!).  I guess I'll never know if either are the parents of John Carvell.

Incidentally there is another marriage - much earlier, in Chesham, of Thos. Coock and Hannah Carvil on 7.12.1707!

It's so frustrating!

Regards,
Diane

Sorry to take so long to reply.  I didn't know someone had responded and had forgotten about my post!

Thankyou for the census details, it was kind of you to look them up.  However, I did have already have them.

Thanks,
Diane
