Thanks for info - thought it would be there, but living in the wilds of New South Wales I was guessing.

Carmarthenshire Completed Requests / Registration District for Llanllawddog

Dear Everyone

Can you please tell me where a child's birth would have been registered if she was born about 1849 in Llanllawddog?  I've lost great grandmother!  Very sad.

Dear Lisa

Found and downloaded The Era entry but could not find The Standard one.  Would really appreciate a copy.  I'm at (*)

Also found absolutely tons of stuff on this whole famiily - upstanding and well respected family, my left foot ;).  If they weren't in court for flogging a child, they were going bankrupt or floating companies that I wouldn't have touched with a barge pole!  Still it makes life interesting, I can add these to my 2 convicts, the father of John Oxley who lied about being in the Royal Navy and a great aunt who was arrested for child murder [she got off!].  Bit more fun than Ag Labs.

Goodness you are a help :)

Just had a look at the British Library Newspapers site.  Found the entry for The Era, but no entry for The Standard, which I found odd.

The Era entry does look intriguing.  Am going to get up at sparrows twit tomorrow morning  ;D and take out a 24 hour pass.

Will let you know what I find

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the continued ideas.

I haven't seen the newspaper entries and would also appreciate the links, if possible.  Sometimes hard to know where to look out here in the Aussie bush!!

I had also thought of Bermuda, or thereabouts as I had found [a long time ago] a reference to a John Oxley Pitt Green coming from somewhere down amongst those Islands, but the date was in the late 1900's.  Wrote it down as a very odd co-incidence [2 bodies with same name nearly 100 years apart].  At the moment, the piece of paper is somewhere in one of the boxes in the house move [of course].  Nearly said a naughty word.

He has me totally interested and determined to find out more about him.  It also appears you all are also interested.

Once again, thank you.

Hi Everyone

Sorry I haven't been back to thank you all for your help - moving house, need I say more!

I had checked him out here in Australia in all the places he could have gone.  I had also checked the hulks.  So I think he must have either served his sentence in an English prison or died on the hulks.

Would he be on the BMD lists do you think?  I shall start having a look.  There is no other reference to him anywhere - as I said, gone missing.

He [and his brother, Richard Hogarth Pitt] are the only 2 of the 16 children of Thomas Pitt and Sarah Green that I have little information on.  Thomas & Sarah are my 3 X great grandparents.

Please accept my thanks for all your help, belated as it is.

Dear Morgan & Craig

Thank you both for the prompt replies to my post.

I did intend to order a birth certificate for my gg mother, Hannah - but the ATM ate my card and I'm waiting for a new one - well, I ask you!  But they do say Family History is patience :)

Rachael is supposed to be an Evans [which is not much better than Jones].

Hannah and husband, John Thomas, and three children, plus three of her brothers, came to Australia in 1877.

I have them in the 1851 Census, with John a labourer
A very doubtful 1861 Census - as a farmer - in Llangafelech [sic], Rachael born Swansea, but with a David 16 yrs [c1845] born Llannon, farm servant.  Have Hannah working as a servant elsewhere, but no sign of William.
1871 Census with John a coal miner, Rachael born Llannon, and Catherine
Nothing appears right in 1881 - but will go and have another look.

Family 'stories' state:
Hannah was eldest child, with many siblings - I can only find William's birth in Wales, but shipping documents show David and Robert.  Catherine seems to belong to the family.  David seems older than Hannah, if he is her brother, and so is William.  Maybe she meant eldest girl.

John Davies was supposed to have married at least once, maybe twice more and that is why the above migrated to get away from him.  Don't know how true - maybe new stepmother was the problem.  He is still alive in 1877 living in Glamorgan, according to shipping documents, but Rachael is not shown [usually means deceased on Australian shipping lists]

Hannah's death certificate [1916] states father, John Davies, Farmer, no mother shown.  Age at death 67 yrs, which bears out 1849 birth.
Hannah's marriage certificate [1869] states father, John Davies, Copperman, and a Margaret Davies was witness, with her mark.  Age at marriage 20 yrs, which bears out 1849 birth.

I think I'll go back to scratch and start again - they must be there somewhere ???

I did check the marriages again - [if David is a child] then there a 2 possible marriages for John in Llanelly [would this qualify as Llanelli?].  On cross checking no Rachael Evans [but as I'm not sure that this is her surname - after all, it could be Jones ;D.  All up several other good possibles but feel I need to be more sure, before spending money on a 'just might be'.

As I said before, many thanks for your help.  I'll come back if I get anywhere.

London and Middlesex / 7 Years Transportation - Gone Missing!

John Oxley Green Pitt [b1824 in Great Yarmouth, NFK] was tried in the Old Bailing on 12 August 1839 for mail theft.  He stole a letter containing  sovereign and 1 half sovereign while employed by the General Post Office.

He was found guilty and sentenced to Transportation for 7 years.

My only problem with this relative is that he did not turn up in New South Wales as a Convict.  And there is no other information that I can find on him [try as I might].

I suspect he was put on the Hulks, but can find no records.  I believe that is what usually happened to convicts.  But I have also heard that sometimes they were taken off the Hulks and put in prison in England.

Is there anyone that can enlighten me on this - I really would like to know what happened to him.

He probably would have been fine if he had been sent out here to Australia, as his older brother, my direct ancestor, migrated here [freely I might add!!] so it would be hoped that he was helped after his sentence was finished.

Wherever he appears he always seems shown as John Oxley Green Pitt - now, tell me how can I lose him!

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / John Davies/Rachael ? - marriage Llangyfelech c1845
« on: Monday 14 February 11 04:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a marriage for my great great grandparents, John Davies and Rachael ?, whose  two children, William,  bc1846 and Hannah, bc1849, are shown on the 1851 Census as being born in Llangyfelach.  I am taking a 'wild' guess that they may have married there.

There are no other children on the 1851 Census.  John born Swansea and Rachael born Llannon.

Other Census are inconclusive, as by 1861 both William and Hannah have left home, and there seems to be several John and Rachael couples.

There has to be other children, as Hannah married John Thomas, and migrated to Australia with her three brother, William, Robert and David.

Can anyone help please :)
