Cumberland / Re: John Wilson of Cardewlees Farm, Dalston
« on: Sunday 05 November 17 01:13 GMT (UK)  »
This is exactly my challenge - I am trying to find a Wilson in a haystack.

When and where was Rev Robert Wilson born ? Rev Robert was born in Dalston, Cumbria in 1802 (bap 31 Mar) and married Eliza Kirkman of Bolton. He died in 1864 in Maryport.

What was the name of his son ? - John, who was the third son of Rev. Robert Wilson. He was in Kirkdale in Liverpool in 1861 census as a lodgteer and pupil teacher. His great uncle left him a substantial sum in 1866 when he died, which he would inherit when he reached the age of 25 in 1872. He inherited a large sum to purchase an estate in Cumberland - and I would love to find out if he did so.

I am trying to trace the descendants of a Dalston man whose skills as an architect are celebrated in the island of Guernsey.

John Wilson was born in 1781 at Cardewlees Farm, Dalston, the son of Robert and Mary.

He joined the Board of Ordnance as a mason, which took him to Guernsey, Channel Islands. While he lived there, he undertook private commissions and was the architect for what are now considered some of the island’s finest buildings.

However, until recently very little was known of his origins. He died in Southampton in 1866 - and left a sum of money to his great nephew, John Wilson, to build a house in Cumbria. We know that his heir was the son of Rev. Robert Wilson of Maryport - but know nothing of his descendants.

In 2018, there are a number of activities planned to mark the 200th anniversary of St James Church, one of his designs. I would like to make contact with anyone who may know any more about this family.

Thanks,
Steve Foote

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Re: Lookup request - Harborne Church burials/ MIs

Colin

Thanks very much for the quick response - I will follow up with BMSGH.

I was aware of the switch of counties in 1891 - given the proximity to Birmingham, I'm surprised it wasn't done sooner!

Thanks again
Steve

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Lookup request - Harborne Church burials/ MIs
« on: Thursday 05 November 15 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
Is there anyone who can help with a lookup for the burial and/or monumental inscription for Edward and Catherine Harris who were buried in Harborne Churchyard. Catherine died 1877 and her husband Edward died in 1882.

I understand the records are in Birmingham Central Library?

If anyone knows of any online versions then please let me know.

Thanks in advance

Is there anyone on the forum who would be able to do a lookup in the Penzance electoral rolls for me?

I am trying to find confirmation that Gerald Edwards lived in Penzance in the 1960s.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Staffordshire / Banks - Brewers of Wolverhampton

I am researching the family of Thomas Banks (1808-1889) who started Banks & Co Brewery in Wolverhampton.

I have tracked them through the census etc - but wondered if anyone knew if there had been a history of the brewey published anywhere - or whether there was anyone out there who knew anything about this family and was willing to compare notes.

There is a brief chronology on their web site - but I have tried contacting their web site for more details and got no response.

I have found the following at a web site about Argentina Genealogy, and wondered if this is the same family:

"To the memory of Samuel Drake Cox.
Murdered near Concordia
3 September, 1870
and of Samuel Cox
son of the above
who died in Entre Rios in the year 1858."

Hi geckogirl
I am also looking for the origins of the Samuel Drake Cox who lived in Guernsey. He had a son called Samuel Drake Cox who was born in Guernsey in 1819. Drake Cox senior was listed as Boot and Shoe Maker in Guernsey in the 1841 Census, and junior was a miller.  They also owned ships, and one of them was a butcher, but I have not worked out which one yet! He was declared bankrupt in Guernsey in 1852.
They disappeared from Guernsey after that - any idea what happened to them?
I will let you know if I discover any more.
