Thanks pityackafromblyth -a good starting point. I didn't know that there were two magistrates courts in Castleford. Tom was from Castleford and his business was in Temple St, so if it happened, he probably came up in front of the Castleford court.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Thomas ( Tom) Moore of Castleford. Up before the local beak !
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 15:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have posted this previously on the 'West Riding Look Up' section - which I think may have been the wrong place as I'm not asking for anyone to do a look up, just hoping for some hints about how to move forward. Apologies if it was a mistake.
I'm really interested in stories which have come down the family. I know that it's wise to treat them with a pinch of salt but some of mine have been very interesting and accurate. One of the stories is that my great grandfather, Tom Moore, ended up in front of the local magistrate for protesting during WW1. Tom had a pop works and a haulage business and his protest was that all his sons had gone off to war and the army(?) had requisitioned his horses and ruined his business.
As I said, I'm not sure that this story is factual and a stumbling block to further research is knowing when it might have happened. I presume that it would be reported in the local press but short of going through 4 years of local papers at the library has anyone any hints about where to start?  Where might I find the records of the magistrates' court? hopefully on line because I no longer live locally.
Many thanks.

I haven't been working on my family history for quite a while - house move, global pandemic etc... but I now want to get back to it.

Hi Bagpuss,
I think the dates may be out- 'my' Horatio Thomas was born in 1862 at Nafferton and married Sarah Clarkson b 1862 probably Sculcotes. His parents were Joseph Holmes born 1834 North Cave and Mary Elizabeth Teall born 1839 in Lund. Both Joseph and Mary Elizabeth are on The Barrel photo which I posted earlier.
You said in your post on the George Holmes Blacksmith line that 'your' Horatio Thomas was born in 1886 which means that 'my' Horatio was possibly 'your' Horatio's and your Grandma Ida's uncle. My Grandfather Joseph Thomas was born in 1888 so would possibly have been your Grandma's cousin.
I must admit that my main interest in Family History are the stories which come down the family. One interesting one I was told about the Holmes family in Beverley is that there was a family charity ( probably of the 'loaf of bread and a new petticoat to 12 deserving spinsters variety! ) and a commemorative window in the Minster. I haven't tracked that one down as yet - have you ever heard anything about it ? I would be really interested if you have any information about it.

Hi Bagpuss,
I am descended from Horatio Thomas Holmes ( b 1862 Nafferton d 1940 Beverley ) he was my grandfather Joseph Holmes' ( b 1888 in Beverley ) father.
I know from bitter experience i.e. following the wrong line, that there are two Horatio Thomas in the family.'My' Horatio Thomas was the publican at the Moulders' Arms and the Dog and Duck ( not the current building) in Beverley.
My grandfather, Joseph, trained as a farrier and won prizes at the Yorkshire show - I still have the impressive certificates.
He moved to Castleford after marrying my grandmother Evelyn Holmes and they had 5 children of whom my mother was one. I have managed to trace Horatio Thomas' line back to the late C18 and wish you well with your research

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: The rising sun pub, whitwood

Hi,
According to the listing the existing ' Rising Sun' pub was originally a Miners Welfare Institute built in 1908, bought by Tetleys in 1948 as replacement for original Rising Sun pub. The current building is a grade 2 listed, as is the adjoining terrace of cottages, and was designed by CFA Voysey for the Briggs family. When I lived in Castleford they had the distinction of being the only listed buildings in Castleford - I'm saying nothing else  ;D !!
It would seem from this information that the pub that your family ran may well have been the original 'Rising Sun' which appears, according to this information, to have been a different building,
If you want a photo of the current 'Rising Sun' there is one on Flickr.

Glad you like it - I wondered about the man in the bushes too !
I have sent a Personal Message and would be interested in any info you have about this branch of the Holmes family.

I cannot attach a photograph to a PM but can attach one to a posting. This is the photograph of Joseph Holmes, Mary Teall, Horatio Thomas Holmes etc taken behind The Barrel at Walkington. Horatio Thomas is my great grandfather and went on to be the publican at the Moulders Arms and the Dog and Duck in Beverley.

Thank you all for your research and this excellent information - I feel as though I have a way forward now. I think it is an good idea to buy Thomas' birth certificate.
BumbleB, I agree with you about the 1853 marriage - it seems as though the whole family didn't move far from the Brotherton/ South Milford/ Fairburn area and as John is shown on the census as being born at South Milford and brought his family up in Fairburn ( which is nearly next door  ) I'm not sure why he would marry in Armley.
I'm sure that I'm doing something wrong on Free BMD as I couldn't find any other John Moore marriage locally apart from the one I mentioned - still, practice makes perfect, so back to the drawing board or at least the BMD website!
