Thank you KGarrad.  You have solved a mystery for me.  :) The Burton Arms!  My Great Grandfather Christopher Brantingham was listed as manager of an Alehouse at 3 Meaburn Street in the 1911 Census.  I have tried finding this place on Google maps etc, but I dont think it is there anymore - although I may be wrong.  I have been trying to find out what the Alehouse was called. Christopher Brantingham and his wife Agnes, and also the eldest son George worked there and it was also their home.  I have a photos taken in the back garden.

In the 1904 Trade Directory, Robert Marshall is listed at 3 & 4 Meaburn Street.
Thanks again.

Hi again everyone. I have had computer/weather problems so not been on recently.  Thanks especially to Trish1120,  who gave me yet another spelling for George Spours/Spoors/Spour/Spurs/Spurrs! You confirmed what I had thought - ie that George was from Penshaw b1760.  I had info on his marriage to Frances Nesham, but only just found siblings to Elizabeth, so your info re Sarah has confirmed things. Where did you find out about Sarah and her parents? Also the burials very helpful too. :)

Thanks so much to everyone for all this information.  Haven't got time to follow it all up now, but you have all been a fantastic help.  Penny.

Hi. I have only just found this site, and it seems we are related! Christopher Brantingham and Elizabeth Spours are my great great great great grandparents.  My paternal grandmother was a Brantingham, born in Sunderland in 1896.  I found this website because I was looking for Sarah Hopper who was born in Witton-Gilbert on 26-1-1726, married Joseph Brantingham, and who must be mine and your 6x great grandfather. I was interested in Sarah as, following another branch in the family tree - the Ileys, I came across and Ann Hopper who married William Iley who was born in 1707.  Probably only a coincidence and quite another family, but coincidences seem to be quite common to my life.  My married name is Cottingham, which is a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and happens to be next to a village called Brantingham. This village appears to be the origin of the name of Brantingham.  Some other members of my branch of the Brantinghams have been able to trace the family back to 1734, but unfortunately I no longer have access to all this information (family squabble!).  Would love to hear from you.
