Again this information may be spurious but I have an Alfred Ernest Matthews b. 1879 in London arriving in Southampton from Singapore 15/07/1935. The quality of the original document is poor and even the transcriber gave up. He's accompanied by his wife Marion Aguster b.1883 and a girl of 21 possibly a milliner b. 1914.

I'm not sure if I can shed any light on the original enquiry but Lillie Connah was my Grand Aunt.

In 1911 she was living with her mother, my Grandmother, Mary Ruth Connah, William Henry Fleming and her two children by him - Ruth Janette b. 1910 and Lillie Gladys who was just 3 days old at the Census. The household was completed by my Grand Uncles Arthur and Herbert. Herbert died at the Front in 1917. At this time my Grandfather, Thomas John Connah, was living over the brush with a lady who described him as her brother on her Census return.

William Henry and Lillie had a third daughter, intriguingly called Cissie, in 1913.

William Henry, Arthur and Herbert were the breadwinners for the household who were living in just three rooms.

Although William Henry and Lillie are listed as being married this is clearly not the case as they finally married in 1919. I have no record of the first marriage that is mentioned and would appreciate any information on that.

All this just deepens the mystery. Divorce was uncommon at the time, was her first husband still alive? Did he perhaps also die in WW1 or did they eventually divorce?
