Thanks Lynn for your information on Edwin Tooley. I have found him on each of the census and the  1939 register and have details of his marriage and children.
I have not yet purchased a copy of his will so cannot confirm that his daughter ,Mary Maria Bignall was the major beneficiary , I had assumed she was just one of the executors .
Best wishes, Moira

My grandfather was the eldest of 13 children and the only one who visited him was the one who emigrated to Canada , when she was back in the UK . He seems to have had no contact with those who lived in the same town or a few miles away. My father did not know his paternal aunts and uncles but had regular contact with his mother's sisters. Only after my father's death did I meet one of granddad's younger sisters, a lovely lady who was able to give me some family history. The other siblings all seemed to be in regular contact but my grandfather chose to cut himself off . Apparently there was no big row he just had no interest in his family. Large families are not always close.

Hi Geoff
Unfortunately I have no further information on John Powers death only his burial date. I do go to Warwick occasionally but usually rely on the registers available on Ancestry. However these still appear not to be complete and my list of things I want to check at the Record Office keeps growing.

I don't know if you have Sarah Raven nee Oakes death certificate?
She  died on 5 May 1849 at Ufton aged 70 years from disease of uterus, not certified. She was the widow of William Raven, labourer (he had died in 1836) The informant was Mary Powers who was present at the death. No address or relationship is given but I assume this would be her daughter in law , the wife of Thomas Powers.
I have followed John and Sarah' s children coming forward but I expect you have all of that and I cannot help going back. I do have more information on Joseph Powers Raven if you are interested.
Best wishes, Moira

Hello,
Sorry I cannot help with your research but I do have an indirect interest in the Powers family of Combroke. My 3xg grandfather was Joseph bap 16 Jan 1816 at Ufton the illegitimate son of Sarah Powers. She was the widow of John Powers bap 3 Sep 1778 at Combroke and buried 3 Feb 1813 at Ufton. So as Joseph was not descended from the Powers family I have not researched them further.
Sarah remarried in 1823 to William Raven and in later life Joseph preferred to use his step father's surname although I have no proof he was his father. In fact it is unlikely as there is a note by the vicar in the  Ufton parish register at the burial of Joseph's infant son , John Raven, that the name is properly Powers though his father(ie Joseph) goes by the name of Raven.

I note from my list of Warwickshire parishes that Warwick Record Office only appear to have Combroke registers back to 1701 and these would appear to be on Ancestry. Prior to this there are some Bishops Transcripts for the seventeenth century which are held at Worcester.
I hope you get a reply from someone with knowledge of the early records.

Hi Eric
So it's not your James Hawley after all. I think the complications you have found is what makes this hobby so fascinating and why it can take years to follow a line back. Also why everything has  to be checked and rechecked.
Really it's fortunate you had just started to look at this family and not spent months researching the wrong father and you do still have a father' s name to research, even if it's one that can be spelt in a dozen different ways.
We seem to have moved away from Oxfordshire, although hopefully you will hear from the original poster with information about where the Tooleys came from.
Good luck with your continuing research

I agree you should keep looking to see if you can find a better match for your James Hawley, especially as it is a name which could be easily mistranscribed . However I would not discount the Tamworth one completely as someone else would have given the information about him and they could have got it wrong. The age on the Tamworth death entry is correct I think.
Good luck searching on Ancestry.  Moira

Hi again Eric,
Sorry for delay in getting back to you. I had not previously researched the Hawley's as they are not directly related to "my" Tooleys but did have the details from 1901 census as James and Elizabeth are living at 141 Osler Street , Edgbaston Birmingham with their daughter and Alfred Tooley.

Alfred Tooley 35 Billiard marker born Whitacre, Warwickshire
Elizabeth 35 wife Fazeley, Staffordshire
Elizabeth M. 10 daughter Birmingham
James Hawley F in law 59 dairyman Wilnecote, Warwickshire
Elizabeth Hawley M in law 60 Wilnecote, Warwickshire

In 1911 James is in Tamworth Union Workhouse and I assume it is his death record at Tamworth in 1914. Elizabeth is still with the Tooleys.

I have now followed James back through the census . In 1891 and 1881 he is a coal miner and in 1861 a day labourer. His birthplace is consistently Wilnecote and Ancestry have a transcribed baptism record:
          Birthdate 26 Apr 1842
          Bap date  17 Jul 1842
           Parents    Adam and Mary Hawley
At Wilnecote and Castle Liberty, Warwickshire

They can all be found on 1851 census

Adam Hawley 40 Besom maker Derbyshire, Matlock
Mary wife 43
William son 18
George son 11.                      All apart from Adam born Wilnecote.
James son 9
Adam son 6
John son 2

Hope that helps. You now have a new county to search in. So probably many months if not years of research ahead of you.
Best wishes, Moira

Hi Eric,
The Tooleys are one of the lines in my son-in-law's family and most of my research has been on Ancestry from where I have the census details and Warwickshire and Birmingham parish records.
I have not taken the family further back as this needs access to Oxfordshire records some of which are on this thread in reply to the original poster. Hopefully she will come back to you as she seems to have more information.
I can perhaps help if you wish to broaden your tree with siblings and their families. Do you have access to the census information or Birmingham records?
I am not aware of an Irish connection . They seem to be from the rural Midlands for several generations. Elizabeth' s grandfather James Henry Tooley born c1839, in Handborough, Oxon moved to Over Whitacre, Warwickshire before 1860 . On the census he is variously described as a carter or a farmer. Several of his sons moved to Birmingham including Alfred and Edwin.
As you say in 1911 Alfred is described as a barman , prior to this he is a billiard marker. Elizabeth Hawley's father was a dairyman. Edwin was a butcher. So I suppose an accountant could consider the family beneath him.
Let me know if you want the census details.
Best wishes, Moira

Hi Eric,
I have Elizabeth May Tooley b1891 in Birmingham on one of my trees. Her parents were Alfred and Elizabeth(nee Hawley). I have her baptism and where she is on 1891,1901 and 1911 census.
I do not have any marriage or death details.
The family does link up with William and Lydia Tooley in Handborough, Oxfordshire via Nether Whitacre in Warwickshire.
Let me know if you need any of the above details or would like to share information. My interest is via Edwin Tooley who is Alfred's brother.
Best wishes, Moira
