You'll have read "The Little General & the Rousay Crofters" by William Thomson.

Indeed. Gunboat sent to quash rebellious crofters on small Orkney island! It was an interesting time.

In fact over the years I think I've probably read every book that's ever been published about Rousay :-[

Welcome to rootschat wiamurray! You are more than welcome to revive old posts on rootschat.  ;D

Thanks!

I have a lot of fond memories associated with the Brieryshaw :)

Last time I saw it standing was, I think, some time in 1994. I passed by one day en route to Moffat from Edinburgh via Langholm and Lockerbie - taking the long way round to visit some of my old haunts  ;D It was more than twelve years before I was back on that part of the A7 and was somewhat confused when I realised I had gone past the Ewes kirkyard without passing the Brieryshaw  ???

The two photos that jenimac found are interesting - 2922 shows the approach to the Brieryshaw as you would have seen it driving north from Langholm. The house that I knew was behind the remaining farm buildings that can be seen in this photo.

I can't figure out 1380. Doesn't look like the Brieryshaw and I can't place that picture at all within that part of Ewes.

Hi,

If it's of any interest I'm related to and (as a child and nascent teenager) remember Hugh and Cissie Gibson who were in Bigland in the 1960s and 1970s and Hugh's brother Stanley.

Hugh and Stanley were both born at Bigland.

Given time I'll be able to dig out some photos of Hugh and Cissie and Stanley and Alice.

If you're not already familiar with it Robert Marwick's Rousay Roots site is a great source of information on Rousay families - http://www.rousayroots.com

Hugh and Stanley's father Alan is on this page http://www.rousayroots.com/a271.html

Have just joined and stumbled across this thread while having a look around. It just so happens that I knew the family that lived in the Brieryshaw back in the 1970s and I still have some photographs from that time.

So with apologies for resurrecting an old thread I thought the OP might be interested to see the attached photos (which I reckon date from 1978).

The family moved out in the mid 1990s and the buildings were subsequently demolished so that the A7 could be straightened. The road used to kink quite severely round the buildings. Some of the old road still exists as a lay-by. The car pictured in this link - http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1815847 - is parked pretty close to where the road can just be seen on the right-hand side of the third photo.
