Hello Scottish New Zealander

It's been a long time since anyone has put in a query on this name.  At that time I said I would ask my cousin if I could relay my information to you but she sadly died several years ago.  Since then I haven't been into my tree.  I do remember looking at a picture of a tobacconist in Glasgow but I can't remember the name of the Stobo.  There are 'millions' of them and it will take me a while to look.  Do you have access to Ancestry as most of my information is on that tree.

If you're still researching Stobo, let me know and I'll see what I can do.  Janet

Thank you again so much for your efforts to help me.  It is really appreciated.  I will ponder your comments, especially those referring to Co Down being split and some of it ending up in Co Armagh.

Good luck with your own searches.

Janet

Thank you so much for your efforts.  You were right to say Henry wasn't likely.  I found him some time back and traced his family as not being my relative.

Sarah 1846 was my 2nd great aunt who died at age 7.

Matthew 1844 was my 2nd great uncle.

Haven't seen your findings for Rosena and David before so I will look at these.

Pinning down an address for my great grandparents is problematic.  There are no records of their births or marriage (we're talking about 1820s) but when the children are born the first 3 are listed as Banbridge, then Henry and David as Tanaghmore, Banbridge, then back to Co Down.  It's really confusing as to what is a townland, or registration district.  So first 3 were associated with Seapatrick Church then the rest with Tullylish.

I'll probably never know where my great grandfather came from as there are only 2 Mat(t)hew Geddes' in Ireland at the time.  In Scotland there are thousands of Matthew Geddes'.

Thank you again.

Janet

Hello Aghadowey.  Thank you for replying.  Yes, I found their baptisms in the Church records. The 3 children came as quite a surprise as their first 4 children were found easily on websites.  In actual fact these 3 and my great grandmother were all baptised together in 1856 following the last birth.  Their parents were Sarah McCracken and Mathew Geddis from Banbridge.  I can't find marriage or death notices for any of the 3 children mentioned, or indeed emigration details. The name Tanaghmore features but I don't know if this is an address or a townland.  I really don't know why these 3 are so elusive when the rest of the family are all traceable.  Sarah and Mathew later went to Scotland to be with older children but no mention of the 3 younger ones.  They returned and Mathew died here (buried in Donaghmore) but Sarah went back to Scotland and died there.  It's just these 3 I know nothing about.

I'm trying to find information on some relatives who were christened in Tullylish Presbyterian Church (found their birth records at PRONI).  After that - nothing.  Their names and dob are David Geddis 1848; Henry Geddis 1851 and Rosena/Rosetta Geddis 1856.  Can anyone help please?

Hello again.  I think I may have made a mistake.  I have James Hamilton as son of Samuel and Christina but his birth date isn't right.  Samuel and Christina did have a son called James.  However, I have just read his Will again and Samuel makes his brother James H Savage Builder his Trustee.  I have him in my tree as his son.  That would make him the brother-in-law of my mother's aunt.  Complicated isn't it.  Does this sound right now?  Conlig ???

Hello Aghadowey.  I'm really amazed to find your post.  I am also researching James Hamilton Savage.   I believe him to be the son of the woman who took my mother and her older sister in when their mother couldn't afford to look after them.  Was his father Samuel Savage and his mother Christina Peters.  They lived in Grays Hill, Bangor.  James Hamilton's mother (if she is the same person) was my mother's aunt.  I had actually called into a local cemetery today to see if any of the Savages were buried there but it was too big to find a single grave. That's how much of a coincidence this is.  Conlig.

Hello.  I have just been asked by a 1st cousin once removed to look into a presumed ancestor of hers, Robert Stobo, who was a tobacco merchant in Glasgow.  This looks remarkably like your ancestor too.  I am trying to go back from 1800 so maybe I'll finish up joining with your search.  I will ask my cousin if I can give you the information I have.  This would give you one strand up to the present day.  Will be in touch again when I have spoken to her.
