Kev,

thanks also for the offer.

I first have to search myself etc doing this for years already.

Strange enough "British families in Russia" is hardly covered in the English genealogical world.

I found an other probably useful source for you, "findrussianheritage.com ". At least you can read a lot sometimes useful information, although I do not know how deep your interest in Russia via your ancestors is going.

Best wishes,

elcas

Hi Sophie,

a longshot back but at least you can try to contact rublitz@gmail.com. A research group in St.Petersburg, linked to the Salt Lake Organisation.

They are very helpful.

Good luck,

Hi Kev,

an intriguing question.

I can not give you a direct answer but try: forum.vgd.ru (translation in English possible)
or contact rublitz@gmail.com.

The last one is a research group in St.-Petersburg and linked to the "Salt Lake society" , and very helpful.

I`m interested in how you contacted the local Hull archive records.

My forbear left Hull to st.-Petersburg around 1800 and I`m still trying to find more details about that.

Good luck anyhow,

The Common Room / Re: Benjamin Harvey, papermaking pioneer

Felix,

what an activity.

I red with interest your findings although at least for the moment no links to my maternal family.

So far I know their name was just Hide.

But any information about papermills/papermakers is important. Is has been a rather complex business.

The Imperial Papermill in Peterhof / Russia is my focus. My Charles Hide worked there, but the question is was he a professional already in England ?

I keep following you!

Thanks,

Elcas

Dear Zebelix......and Benjamin,

First to Benjamin: the members of the team were payed by the Tsar. Not the Fourdrinier brothers.
However just know - believe or not - I came across an article in Mechanics magazine, Vol.XVI, page 421 an article "Caution to mechanics against emigrating to Russia", 1831. There is my 4x grandfather Hide mentioned working at the Imperial Papermill.

My research convinced me already that he was a papermaker. By now I`m almost 100% certain that he was working at the Imperial Papermill and could therefore help the English team installing the Fourdrinier machines by "interpreting".

To Zebelix: yes I`m interesting in your family line although the combination of "Harvey Hide" is new for me.

Eagerly waiting, Elcas

The Common Room / Re: "mantua m "a profession ?

This description adds even more to at least to my imagination of the kind of apprenticeship of this possible member in my family-tree.
Knowing a bit about dressmaking, making a "manteau/French or mantel/Dutch" is not that simple.

Many thanks to you all and have a fruitful New Year

Armed Forces / Re: List of all Battle of Waterloo men - free lookup offer

Martin, what a great offer.

I wonder if you have the name of Charles Hide, born 24 -10-1782 in Bury St.Edmunds.

I`m desperate to find this 3x grandfather.

He left after ..?....and married in 1817 in St.-Petersburg an English lady who was born in that town.

He seemed to spoke more then just English.

So I was wondering has he joined the army and then went on to Russia ?

Many thanks,

elcas
