Hello again!

I had a successful trip to the Portsmouth Records Office. I firstly looked at an 1880 plan of Eastern Villas Road showing all the plots. Kithurst wasn't specifically marked on there. I also looked at an 1898 Ordnance Survey map of that part of Southsea which showed all the building on the street had been completed by then.

I then found a reference to when the houses on the street were re-numbered on 21/08/1902 so the staff got the map out for me. It was very fragile so i had to copy it rather than photocopy, but it shows the location of Kithurst.

It was the most southerley house in a row of 3 collectively known as Eastern Villas, and from my trip down there yesterday, i can tell you it's still standing.

If you'd like to send me your address i can send you the photocopies of the street plan, ordnance survey map, and my copy of the 1902 map showing all the houses named. Also, it wouldn't be a bother to get my friend with a digicam to take a photo, we can do the other addresses for you if you like.

I hope this helps your studies. I really enjoyed it, it was my first time in the Records Office, i think i might be hooked now!

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Re: Killamarsh Parish Register- Marriage
« on: Wednesday 08 March 06 09:22 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for the advice. I've already found 2 possible marriages in the Chesterfield registration district, but i wanted to be more specific, to see if i could narrow one of them down to Killamarsh parish.

My fella was married in Worksop in 1873 after being with his lass for 13 years, so im just testing the possible theory that he was previously married in his home town.

I might just bite the bullet and order the certs!

Hello again

I just went for a drive down to Eastern Villas Road. Its a road built in a crescent shape with large houses either side. I checked each one and didn't find one called Kithurst. There are places where villas were knocked down and flats built in their place, and most of the rest have numbers instead of names.

Im just gonna refer to my Southsea books now and see if i can find a reference in there, ill get back to you.

The location is great by the way! The road leads out onto Southsea Common, and is a 2 minute walk from the pier, it would have been very exclusive back then, in fact it still looks it judging by the posh cars parked down there!

Nottinghamshire / Re: Thomas Moore of Gringley

Hiya

I've checked the Notts FHS disk for baptisms and i only found 2 Moore's baptised in Gringley, Elizabeth and George, children of Paul and Rebecca Moore, in 1848 and 1850 respectively.

It is possible that the year in question hasn't yet been transcribed. Was he definately born in Gringley? I checked the surname Moor too, but didn't find any.

You might have to ask someone to check the Gringley parish register at the Notts County Archives.

All the best,

Hiya

Oh i see! Well you never know, they might have been unconventional... Some ancestors of mine were together 13 years and had 5 kids before they married! Ill have a look later to see if there are any other possibles.

See if you can find someone who can check the parish records for you though, that might be your best bet.

All the best

Hiya

I live in Portsmouth, so maybe i can help.

I know Fawcett road well, i used to live off it. It's one of the main north/south roads through Southsea, the northern part of it is a mixture of housing and small shops, then it goes round an s bend and the southern half is all terraced housing. This part has the Portsmouth Jewish cemetery on it, the cemetery has been there a lot longer though and Southsea kind of grew around it.

Goodwood Road is also in Southsea, it leads onto Albert Road, one of the main west/east thoroughfares in Southsea, and it again is terraced housing.

Eastern Villas Road is very much more a posh area, it's nearer the seafront, so is full of big detached houses.

I'm only in Portsmouth for another few weeks (leaving after 9 years!  :() but if you like i can go and have alook at the addresses, see if they're still there and all that. Southsea and Portsmouth were heavily bombed in WWII and then parts were cleared for redevelopment afterwards.

Hope i've been of help!
