Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Children of Stephen Umpleby

Interesting! There was a burial for Jane, wife of Stephen Umblebie, in 1708.  So you could be right with Elizabeth being Stephen's sister-in-law...

Oh dear  :o

This may be a silly a question but I suppose incestuous had the same meaning back then as it does now?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Children of Stephen Umpleby
« on: Sunday 09 April 23 20:53 BST (UK)  »
I have found that the brother of one of my ancestors was named Stephen Umpleby, a Catholic who was living in the late 1600s and early 1700s. He was baptised at Hampsthwaite but appears to have moved to Burton Leonard (where his sister also moved to) and had at least 2 children with a lady named Elizabeth. So far, I haven't found a marriage record for Stephen and Elizabeth but I live in hope!

There are words written in the PRs for both of his children that I simply cannot make out! Maybe a fresh pair of eyes can help  ???

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Staceys of Knottingley

From my research, I can claim descent from William Stacey, a wheelwright who lived in Knottingley at the end of the 18th century. There’s very little information about him. He seems to have been married twice but the identity of his first wife remains a mystery. He had 2 children, John in 1786 and Mary in 1788, before marrying a lady named Frances Hudnell in 1793 and having a further 11 children with her. He died in 1815 and his burial entry in the PRs of St Boltolph suggests he was born circa 1761.

There were just 2 other Stacey families living in Knottingley around the same time as my William.
Joseph Stacey had a son named John baptised at St Botolph’ in 1788. Joseph himself died young and was buried at the same church in 1790, aged 26. This puts his birth year as about 1764 so he was possibly a brother or cousin of my William.

There was also John Stacey who confusingly also married a lady named Frances. John was a wheelwright like my William and he had 11 children with her, all baptised in Knottingley between 1791 and 1811. John was buried in 1829 at St Botolph’s and his burial record puts his year of birth as around 1758.

So I have three men named Stacey, born between 1758 and 1764, all living in Knottingley around the same time. I’ve come to a dead end with my William Stacey but I would like to find the link between these men if there is one. There aren’t any earlier Stacey’s in the PRs for St Botolph’s so I’m not sure they were local originally. Their descendants were mariners and watermen on the river Aire so it’s possible they came from further afield as well. Maybe a fresh pair of eyes will be able to spot something I’ve missed?

I have a black sheep in mind but he was so dark he never turns up in the records!

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Taylor Family of Sheffield

Did either John Taylor or William Taylor leave a will? If you’re fortunate enough, one of them may have named his children in the will. Daughters were usually referred to as (name) wife of (husband’s name) unless they were unmarried at the time. Did Tobias Ellis leave a will? He may have other Taylors as witnesses.

Possible children for Tobias Ellis and Mary Taylor at Sheffield SS Peter and Paul:

14 March 1715 Tobias Ellis son of Tobias
20 June 1718 Anne Ellis dau of Tobias

Edit: There is a 1738 burial for Tobias Sr although I’ve not seen one for Mary yet

Did you mean to write ‘Elizabeth’? Tobias Ellis married Mary Taylor in 1714 at Ecclesfield.

So at some point, probably between 1891 and 1896, Samuel Odell either died or he and Mary Ellen separated.

Samuel Odell - High Cudworth

I also have him on the Electoral Register for 1895. He disappears after this.
