Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Maine's Farm, Beeding Road, Steyning, Sx
« on: Monday 05 December 11 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
I have just found a copy of a ten year old letter that was sent to another relative.

The family I am looking for is Lewis/Lewes. It seems that they may have been in Beeding around this time.

Mystery solved!

Death Certificate proved that I had found the right Rachel this time..... and a copy of a ten year old letter states that grand children were living there!

Hi Gary,
John Fry, son of Henry Fry (c.1730, ?) and Ann Seward (March1732, Wambrook), born April?, 1760, Wambrook.
The Wambrook register is damaged for many entries from the 1730s to after the 1760s. The exact date of John's baptism is illegible, but in section above 1761
There is, however an early 19thC transcript. The Transcriber found April.

Ann Seward, his mother, was the daughter of George Seward and Ann of Wambrook. Don't know when they married, but I have distinguished this couple as her parents - though for a time I had her confused with 2 other contemporary Ann Sewards in the neighbouring village of Chardstock! She did have a brother, John.

I cannot confirm your trail, but it certainly seems likely. I have found a different spelling  to Mary Mattocks -- Matlocke.

As I am in Portugal, although closer to the UK, reaerch problems are much the same!

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Re: CHARLTON Registers- Philip FRY 1831

Thanks for all your hard work, but it's beginning to look like a wild goose chase, as all these people seem to be from Wiltshire.

I was hoping that back a couple of generations we would be finding people in Dorset/Devon.

The only Hannah Fry I have of the right age, but maiden name and birthplace unknown was married to a William Fry (whose mother was also a Hannah) but she was not a widow in 1840. I think they were all in the Chardstock area until after 1851.

Back to the drawing board and 1891/1901.
Thanks

Thanks for your work....but it is beginning to look as if he's not related at all, and the surname, Fry, is just a coincidence.

Still, what an over 80 year old with a gammy leg was doing at a farm in Steyning around the turn of the century, will have to remain a mystery.

Any names at the main Maine's farmhouse, 'Lewis' comes to mind, or anyone obviously born in Dorset/Devon?

Cheers

Thanks Trish and Wozzle,
That appears to be the right one then, with the actual image date, and Addington is where he seems to have spent the rest of his life - married and settled down.
Cheers

Hi Doran,
Having found that Philip was born in Charlton, Wiltshire I have also been investigating on the Wiltshire board, and it seems that 1841 Philip (1836) the son of William is not the Philip (1831) we are looking for, as some one has found Philip (1836) and father William at West Dean on the 1851.

The 1851 North Cerney one looks to be the right Philip Fry, as the birth year is only a year out and his occupation is Gardener.
Bliss does not connect with anyone on my charts.

Looks like I'm going to have to order his marriage certificate to get any further back on this line!

Thanks,
Watermusic

That's great Wozzle!
Thanks a lot.
I had found his marriage, and possibly 5 children - Ada, Elizabeth, Ellen?(1881), Arthur and Herbert.
1901 He's still in Addington, Kent aged 70, but no occupation mentioned on the record I found.

You say he's not the Philip Fry, 1836 at East Grimstead? Where's that one in 1851 then?

I've just ordered and received a few Certs. which has started me on this particular chase.

Thanks

I've tried the 1851 on FreeCEN, but I get no results....where was he living then?
