Hi

He is commemorated on the El Alamein memorial in Egypt.

There is an active group on Facebook on the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry which might have more information on his service - https://www.facebook.com/sherwoodrangersyeomanry/

Hi

Judging by the bases he was at, it is very likely he served on Landing Craft. The ones listed on his service record were mostly shore based establishments which would have been where his pay office was located.
HMS Hamilcar was a landing craft base in Algeria. HMS Dinosaur was in Troon, Ayrshire (Landing Craft Tank HQ).
Do you know what his service number was?

Yes, that is right. There are three records on the site.

Do you know what happened to the family post-war?

Hi Colin

It would be very interesting to see these letters. I presume he was Yugoslav?

Hi

I have looked up your relative. I am assuming that this is the same lady:

Born 21-Jul-1881, Studley, Warwickshire

There is a note on the record (Home Office: Aliens Department: Internees Index, 1939-1947 - HO 396/81) which indicates that she was interned because she was on holiday in England in late August 1939, and that her son, although born in England, was serving with the German Air Force.

It is dated 15th August 1940. She was living in New Eltham, SE9.

From another document (HO 396/275) it appears that we was moved from Holloway prison on the 9th September 1940 to the Isle of Man. She was then authorised for release on the 30-Jun-1941 and recategorised as 'B', and released on the 8-Jul-1941.

I hope that helps

Hi

Pakan Baroe was the location of the Sumatra railway - built by POWs but not as well known as the Thai/Burma one. There is some good information on this site - http://pakanbaroe.webs.com/

His Japanese POW index card indicates that he died from BeriBeri on 17th May 1945.

I recommend that you contact the Thai-Burma Railway Centre in Kanchanaburi - they have records on FEPOWs (not just those in Thailand) and are very helpful.

Oxfordshire / Oxfordshire War Memorials
« on: Friday 17 February 17 10:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I've recently started photographing and recording names on Oxfordshire war memorials (including those which were formerly in Berkshire).

If anyone has relatives recorded on memorials in the county and would like a photo, please let me know. Likewise, if anyone has information on any casualties recorded on memorials in the county, I would be happy to hear from you.

My research focus is Second World War casualties, but any information would be interesting.

For anyone interested, there are a number of good books and websites which detail men and women recorded on local memorials already, such as:
