Other Countries / Chinese ancestry: Liu (South China) Birth/Death/Immigration
« on: Friday 09 July 21 14:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I have Chinese ancestry, quite likely to be from the South of China.

My grandfather Hing K Liu on my mum's side was Chinese as was his father but I am struggling to find any birth/death or immigration records for either person despite Hing being married in London in 1964.

My grandfather Hing K Liu was said to have died in 1977.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Terri

You really need to be more specific about what you are after to save us spending time looking for information you already have  ;)

Hi Rosie,

I've updated my original post a little more. I am particularly interested in the farms the men lived/worked on and the careers they had such as the shipyard or ships they may have worked on.

William Weir (12 February 1846 - 1916)
Shipyard Engineer Laborer
Hay Hill farm, Cadder, NW Springburn, NNW Glasgow

David Weir (1852 - 1917)
Cadder
Shipyard Timekeeper

John Anderson F/Sergeant
B:26/03/1912
D:25/05/1968 Scotland

John Anderson son of George Weir Anderson married Sarah Nimmer Hood Stewart on the 5th of October 1939 in the District of Blythswood in the Burgh of Glasgow. He was 27 years old at the time. John's profession was listed as 'Leading aircraftsmen, Royal Air Force' and his usual residence was listed as 'Royal Air Force Station, Montrose'.

On the 10th of September 1944 John and Sarah had a baby (now deceased). At this time, John's occupation was listed as a 'Sergeant, Royal Air Force' and his usual residence was listed as '169 Shamrock Street, Glasgow', which I believe were barracks.

I am particularly interested in finding out about John's later life including where he passed away.

Kind regards

Terri

Hi there
Isabella Weir was my gran. My dad is her first born son David. Sadly one of my uncles have passed away so there’s only 4 of her boys left. We did a family tree for my dad a few years ago. It’s a great learning experience about our history. Hope your Dad enjoyed his book 😊

@Wispynut Hi there, I hope you don't mind me dropping you a message but I was just wondering whether this is Isabella Strang Weir born 1896?

Hello,

I would like to learn more about my Scottish ancestors.

The Weirs appear to have links to Hay Hill Farm, Cadder and Barmulloch Farm, Glasgow which I am keen in hearing more about.

I am looking for information on their wives, children and any addresses they're linked to.

I believe William Findlay Weir was a Scottish professional footballer and later joined the Royal Engineers where he was posted to the Western Front. William rose to the rank of Sergeant and I am interested in hearing more about his military career.

John Anderson (18 Oct 1859)
Plewlands, Drainie, Moray, Scotland, United Kingdom

William Anderson (1887–1967)

A lot of groping around in the dark with this one.  Any possibility that Hing abandoned Doreen and 'married' someone else?  There is this marriage:-

Marriages Sep 1975
LIU    HING K    TAM    WESTMINSTER    15   1853
TAM    SUK Y    LIU    WESTMINSTER    15   1853

It may not be your Hing but I thought I would flag it up.

It is possible. Doreen died in 1977, which is when H K Liu was described as her deceased ex-husband, so it could simply be that Hing was "dead to" Doreen. The only way I assume this could be confirmed would be to purchase a copy of the marriage certificate between Hing K Liu and Suk Y Tam, then check who Hing's father is listed as?

Kind regards

Terri

What I find strange is that I cannot find any birth record for Hing at all.  There appears to be only one Liu/Smith birth and that is in 1951.

This is assuming that Dorothy Smith was Hing's mother.  As I said previously I cannot find any marriage for a liu to a Smith.

Do you know anything about Hing's mother?

Hi,

This has been our difficulty too and sadly we know nothing about Hing's mother or of any surviving relatives.

It's possible that Hing was not born in the UK, in which case, I'm not really sure where we ought to go next.

Kind regards

Terri

What age was given for Hing on the marriage certificate when Hing married Doreen?  Who were the witnesses?

Hi,

Hing was 21 on said marriage certificate. The witnesses were S N H Anderson (who I believe to be Sarah Nimmo Hood Anderson - Doreen's mother) and J P Biggs who is unknown to us. Although it was suggested that when Doreen moved from Glasgow to London she came with her friend Joan.

Kind regards,

Terri

Was Hing's mother a Dorothy May Liu nee Smith?

There is a Dorothy M Smith living in East Ham in the 1939 Register.  The name Li? is also included by her surname.

I think this is her birth going by one of the other family members.

SMITH, DOROTHY  MAY     WHITE
GRO Reference: 1918  M Quarter in WEST HAM  Volume 04A  Page 414

I cannot seem to find any marriage for Dorothy to a Liu. Did she marry Liu in the UK or elsewhere? Her death is equally hard to find.

Hello,

Unfortunately we do not know the name of Hing's mother. Only that his father's name was also a variant of H K Liu. This was found on his marriage certificate to Doreen.

Thanks,

Terri

I really can't see that there is anything to be done;
Is the divorce record available? What was his address at that point in time (and WHEN was it even?)

(You have given a "he was linked to address" in east ham, yet didn't say when that was!)

Pauline

Hello,

We do not have a divorce record. We're not even sure if the marriage ended by divorce or purely Hing's death. Nor have we been able to locate Hing's death certificate.

Hing was linked to the address of 299 Barking Road in 1964. It was on his marriage certificate for his marriage to Doreen.

Thanks,

Terri
