Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Edward Taylor alias Jenkins 1739-1821
« on: Sunday 03 May 15 19:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi I was wondering if you found out why Taylor alias Jenkins had been used. I would be really interested to know as I've recently found out that there is a connection to my husbands family tree with Edward Jenkins. Thanks.

Hi lalkav!

The only thing I have found on Edward is possible match on a baptism in Broomfield.  The boy named Edward Jenkins Taylor is the son of Sarah Taylor, baptised on the 25 March 1739. http://www.wsom.org.uk/Registers/BmfBap17001753.htm

Since there is no father on record I suspect that he was an illegitimate child and his fathers name might have been Jenkins and that Edward later in life decided to use his fathers surname and not his mother's.

I have not been able to track down any possible fathers and I have no hope of doing so. You might be able to continue by looking in to Sarah Taylor's family though.

"...of Lincoln six silver tea spoons..."  The character after "Lincoln" is a line filler and not part of the text.

"...And as to all the rest and residue of my monies and securities for money personal estate and effects of every description..."

"...the same and every part thereof..."

"...my just debts..."

"...the expences of proving this my Will and incident or relating thereto And I hereby nominate constitute and appoint the said Mary..."

"...and hereby authorize and empower her to deduct and retain all expences which she may incur in the..."

"...In Witness whereof..."

"...have hereunto set my hand this seventeenth day of May one thousand..."

"...presence of us (present at the same time) who in her presence at her request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names..."

I think it is "Lilly" rather than "Silly".

Thanks again horsleydown! You corrected a few mistakes that I had done, particularly the name Silly lol. Thanks for your help, I am so happy to be finished with this :)

"...niece Elizabeth wife of John Smith of Lincoln..."

The second bequest to Elizabeth is "...a Silver Sugar tongs..."

"...Susanna Dowling All my china books and pictures..."

"...my four nieces..."

"...bed and table linen of every description..."

I believe the next name is "Hannah Slater"

"...my money in the Funds[?] but if she should not be living at the time of my decease then I direct that the same.."

I'm not sure of the initial letter of "Funds", but she refers to "money in the funds" lower down.

"...my said four nieces..."

"...the execution of this my Will and as to the monies in the funds now standing in my own name in the Annuities for terms of years or otherwise..."

Thanks for your work horsleydown! I added all that to the first post. There is not a lot left now! :)

I direct my executrix hereinafter named to sell and dispose

as soon as conveniently maybe

divide the clear proceeds to arise therefrom unto and equally between (named brothers) and the children of my late deceased brother....share and share alike

as tenants in common
silver tea spoons marked S E N (I think) and the next girl also gets spoons marked with the same letters

Thanks for your input clayton! A lot of those things where repeated in the text so there is not much left now. I edited the first post I did with the current text that I have.

I think one bit reads

'after my decease and to pay and divide . . . proceeds'

Thanks Ilona, I think you are correct! "after my
decease and to pay and divide the ... proceeds to arise ..."

Thanks, just added that to my document.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Edward Taylor alias Jenkins 1739-1821
« on: Wednesday 29 January 14 18:27 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out where Edward Taylor @ Jenkins comes from.

He married Mary Hobbs in Goathurst, Somerset, 19 September 1762 according to http://www.wsom.org.uk/Registers/GhstMar16821812.htm
I am not sure which his real surname is, probably Taylor, but why would he want to change it?

There first child, born 1764, was called Susanna Taylor @ Jenkins but there second child, born 1766, was called Sarah Jenkins. After 1764 there are not signs of the name Taylor ever being used again. They got a total of 7 kids and Mary Died in 1787, aged 55.

Edward might have married again after Mary died. In 1788 an Edward Jenkins married Mary Mullins in Goathurst, but I don't think they had any children. I am not sure if this is the same Edward Jenkins but there were not a lot of them around.

Edward died in Goathurst, 1821 at an age of 82 years.

Does anybody have any information about Edward and why he would have wanted to change his name? His decision to change it would in that case be the reason my mothers maiden name is Jenkins.

Thanks in advance.
Oliver
